Legacy is a very decent event...a good solid competition, which can be hard to find. I like how the judges speak to the dancers at the awards sessions. Also, love the cash prizes!

Legacy is the only competition I go to where they allow advanced studios level down during competition. It isn’t far to have the same dancers from the same studios compete in both intermediate and advanced. They’re either advanced or they’re not. This makes the competition really unfair and allows advanced studios to take all the first places from the dancers that deserve it.
This Intermediate level is the bane of the competition industry these days. We're seeing clearly Advanced studios putting ALL their entries in Intermediate. What is that teaching their students? We don't allow "advanced" studios to "level Down". Our rules state more than 50% of the dancers in a routine must be Intermediate level for it to qualify as Intermediate. We also have amount of dances a dancer is in to level dancers. Schools somehow seem to keep meeting qualifications even though I tweak the rules every year. Doing the best I can to keep the Intermediate level truly Intermediate. I will tweak the rules once again for 2023.
This competition is very fun but ran late for us and the venue was not very good. The way the schedule was set up my daughter had to be there at night on Friday, then she was one of the early routines saturday so we had to be there at open and she was also one of the last and ended up having to spend the ENTIRE day at the venue. We did not leave until after 11pm. This wouldnt have been so bad if we had a better venue or even if the venue had better parking that made leaving and returning easier. We have gone to legacy in the past and enjoyed though.
Just back from Legacy in Detroit. Overall a smoothly ran competition. Pros: Loved the extra judges awards. Ran on time if not a tad bit early. Con: Way too many Platinum's . I felt like that is all I heard all weekend (and I was there with two dancers). I think there should be Platinum Plus or something special for those who placed high. It really wasn't special getting a Platinum since every single kid got them. I also felt like the ones that did get the Elite Gold had to feel awful since most were not getting that. Another thing I did not like was that the overall plaques say "TOP 5 OVERALL" ... i get the top 10 overall plaques for 6-10th place but I think there should be a 2nd place & 3rd place plaque for those dancers. My daughter who got 2nd got a top five overall plaque. 2nd place plaque would be nicer in my opinion. I am sure at most competitions you have a 2nd & 3rd place winner. The 1st place trophies are nice though! The MC while super nice he did take forever with awards. Heard many many people complaining. For solos he announced the studio, song name, dancers first and last name. Then did it again when they won. I get personalizing the experience but I think some of it could be left out. All in all it was an ok experience for us.
First time attending in Niagara Falls. Fantastic staff and competition runs on time . Fair judging and I was thrilled to see 3 tap microphones and judges who could evaluate tap competently. Will definitely be back and looking into attending their nationals !
Legacy is always well run. My o our complaint is it got too far ahead making it hard on families and dancers. They did communicate very well about being ahead though.
I’m not normally a complainer. I am a studio owner with 10+ years taking kids to competition. I have attended Legacy for many years now and have noticed a decline in professionalism and ethics by this company. Last season, my employee called in to make a payment and the female associate on the phone with her was so rude, my employee cried. I thought it was a one time issue as I had no other indicators that this competition was unprofessional. Last weekend, my studio attended Legacy in Indianapolis. Before registering my 60 hip hop routines, I asked the office for a hip hop specialist judge to be on staff. Not because we want high awards but because we want evaluated by someone with real experience teaching streetdance and recognizing true styles and foundation. I want critiques that are helpful. I was given the green light. When we arrived to the venue, we read the bios and only one judge had anything listed about hip hop and it was mixed with every style of dance. Our marks were very low the entire weekend and based upon which hip hop routines were receiving good marks, the judges were not experienced in hip hop. Upon completion of the competition, I emailed the owner (Dave) and asked why we did not have a hip hop specialist on panel. He was condescending, short and (I felt) making excuses and covering his mistake. I emailed him back (it was friendly and professional) and he has chosen not to respond to me any further. He only emailed me once. I am appalled by his lack of professionalism and business ethics. I am a business owner myself and I know it’s hard. Nobody is perfect. But, he did not make it right. Instead, he made excuses. Since he will not respond to my email, I am posting here.
The competition was well run and judging was fair and accurate. My only complaint, and this is across all competitions, is the use of 3 levels. You see more leveling down when there are 3 to choose from and it leaves our team with no competition at the highest level. Our junior small group had no other teams to compete against and there were only 3 junior solos in the highest level. If a routine would have scored a platinum in the higher level they should automatically be bumped up.
Thanks for the review. Leveling down is indeed a major issue these days. We keep tweaking our rules to prevent this, but people always seem to find a loophole. I can honestly say that at our events the lower levels 99.9% of the time never score high enough to receive a Platinum at the Advanced level. Thanks for the input though. It's a good idea:)
We attended this in 2018 and loved it. The venue was great- but a little loud. The staff was helpful and friendly and the preordering video/pictures was very convenient. It went very smooth and was ahead of schedule. We had such a good time at this competition and recommend it for future years
Always happy to hear we're doing a good job. Thanks for the review:)
Gone to legacy numerous times. Have had a wide variety of experiences. Normally a chill and well run comp. last time was overbooked and they ran a second stage in a gymnasium. The stage was very out of proportion and swallowed up the littlest dancers. But other than that, we have always enjoyed it.
Thanks for the input. When running 2 rooms we like to make the 2nd stage as big as the main stage to accommodate the teens & seniors. Perhaps we should consider making it a bit smaller as it is basically just for solos & duet/trios.
I loved my first dance competition at Legacy Dance championships
Glad to hear it:)
This is the 3rd year we've attended Legacy. We have always had a positive experience at this competition & this year was no different. Things ran on time & efficiently. The backstage staff was helpful & friendly. Judging was tough (very few platinums were given out), but fair & consistent with other competitions we've attended. I liked the addition of special awards (which this competition hadn't had in the past). Photos were great quality & reasonably priced compared to other competitions. The venue is spacious enough to accommodate all dancers without overcrowding. On-site concessions were good (the smoothies were a favorite with our dancers!) as well. Overall it was a nice weekend, and we will almost certainly return next year!
Thanks for the kind & honest review. Looking forward to seeing you in 2019!!
Absolutely love this competition! They know how to judge ballet and it is SO refreshing. The judging is fair, they do not favor any one studio and each judge knows exactly what they are talking about. Legacy is one of our favorite competitions to attend and we take Ballet en Pointe, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Lyrical and Contemporary. We just wish they also would do a convention. ;)
Thanks for the great review. A convention/master class series is constantly being tossed about and not out of the question in the near future:)
Had an amazing time at Legacy this year. The woman that was in charge of keeping everyone on time was so great..... She didn't miss a beat, everything was so organized and well run this year. The judges critiques were great you could hear each judge and they had good comments, very thorough and helpful. The awards ran on time and were very organized. The dressing rooms had plenty of room for everyone, temperature great no to hot with so many people it was perfect good venue. Had an awesome time and was one of the best we attended this season. It doesn't let me choose which event but this was Detroit in Waterford..... Loved it!!
By far the best competition we attended this season, but this may be more about how awful the others were. But we had no real complaints at this comp. We were at the Ames Center in Bloomington which is a great theater. Plenty of dressing room space and it was near the stage. I wish there were more places for girls to run dances at, it gets crazy trying to walk through the building sometimes. Also dislike the food policy, they were really strict having people stationed at the door and making people throw away food or drinks if they attempted to bring something in. But otherwise, no major venue complaints. Ran on time or ahead, awards were done as quickly as possible. I do like that they give a top 10 no matter how many entries in a category. Since not many platinums are given out (or many golds either) it was nice to see how the 75% of teams getting a high gold placed relative to each other. Judging seemed very fair and equal. Schedule was sent out in a timely manner as well, which is appreciated!
Pros: Everyone gets a trophy (but they are small). We pay enough for solo entry fees and dancers work hard, so it's nice that they all get a trophy for their adjudication award. Awards are quick and not a lot of fluff. As a parent who is usually there all weekend from beginning to end, I really appreciate the no nonsense awards. It was done quickly without wasted time for calling teachers up and taking photos. Nothing higher than a platinum, and for the advanced level the older dances must score 291 or higher, so I feel the platinums are truly earned. Not a lot of platinums were given out, unlike some competitions where almost everyone gets a platinum. The scores needed to win each medal are printed in the program, which is nice. If there were less than ten entries for overalls, all entries were still listed in the order they scored. For example, if there were only six junior intermediate small groups, they still announced top six in order. Other competitions may only do top five or top one. It is nice to see where our dancers placed no matter how many entries there were. Cons - The age requirements are all over the place. For solos they count the age you are that date, and for everything else it is the age as of July 1st, but then it is different for Nationals. Why not make everything January 1st like most competitions? Also Legacy breaks down juniors into petites (9-10) and juniors (11-12). This is nice for the younger dancers, as they have more opportunities to place in overalls, but why not do the same for teens and have 13-14 and 15-16? Doesn't seem fair to have more age categories for the younger ones but for the teenagers it is still 13-15 and 16-19. The trophies are small and very cheap. I understand it is not all about a trophy but for the amount we pay for an entry fee, and more substantial trophy would be nice. There are too many categories in one awards segment. This makes for a very long day. It would be nice to have just solos, then awards, just small groups, then awards, etc. Yes this makes for more award ceremonies but we would not have to stay all day and all night. Both nights we didn't leave until almost midnight due to having to stay for awards. Finally, I was told I had to empty my daughter's water bottle before we could get into the building. Not sure if this was the policy of Legacy or the venue but I wanted to point it out. I understand no outside food but really? Empty out a water bottle? Overall not much stands out to me to make Legacy that different from any other comp. Not my favorite, not my least favorite.
I sent a check to hold my routines in September that was misplaced by Legacy. Thankfully I sent it certified mail and they honored that by still letting us in after the event sold out. That said I was given no apology but they let me in so in the end they did the right the thing. The competition was overall run pretty smooth and they are good communicators there was very little surprises. The pro's here was a smooth event that ran on time, nice flooring (my dancers really liked the stages), judging was fair and I liked that the majority of dances did not get a "Platinum"...even when it was my own pieces I appreciated that Platinum's were rare. The cons were...the staff was good but openly complained that this event was short staffed. Not that it effected the experience of the event but it was a tad bit unprofessional. The awards did not have any judges choice or choreography awards...I kinda liked getting straight to the point but my parents and dancers really missed this so I would take it into consideration when choosing Legacy. Overall, it was organized, well communicated, and fair. The supporting staff was mostly good with a few who lacked some professionalism. It was good and I would have no problem returning.
Our studio just went to Legacy in Chanhassen, MN 4/27-4/30. Our studio usually goes to Legacy and have liked it. Not so much this year. We have liked it better when it is at the Minneapolis Convention Center or St. Paul River Center. Our studio couldn't make it to the ones scheduled there this year because of the dates. Chanhassen High School is NOT equipped to house this type of event. The theater was way too small, people were standing everywhere and even sitting on the steps. There wasn't a reserved section for the studio directors/teachers. The studio teachers/directors had to fight to find a seat to watch their dances. Most of the seats were taken by the dancers themselves. I know they want to watch their friends and support them, but they should not be allowed to sit. If they want to watch, they should come in when their studio goes backstage and stand. This is what our studio was forced to do on Sunday or they just didn't come in to watch. Studios were saving entire rows of seats in this overcrowded theater. They even had to set up a second stage in the gym because there was just too many entries. There were a couple of studios that had 15 or more dances entered, most of which had the same exact dancers in the same exact category. There were TONS of tap dances at this competition as well, way more than I have ever seen at any competition. I overheard several people say they should have a separate competition just for tap because there were that many tap routines. The day should be broken up into more awards. This will mostly eliminate the overcrowding. If the studio doesn't have anymore dances after their awards, they leave. I believe the competition should end, including awards, before 8 pm on a Sunday. Leaving a venue 35 minutes away from home at 9 pm or later when the kids have school the next day is NOT cool. The kids need time to unwind after the excitement of the day. I know we don't have to stay, but try telling a dancer they can't be there to see what award their dance routine gets. Overall, the competition is ok. It has never been one of mine or my daughter's personal favorites, but it has been decent. The dressing rooms are plenty big enough and it runs in order for the most part. If not, it is clearly stated they are going back or jumping ahead. Judging was ok, nothing to really note good or bad.
We have been attending Legacy for 5 years. It is by far our favorite competition. Kids feel encouraged and rewarded for their hard work. Judging is fair. The office is always great with communication and usually returns phone calls and emails the same day. Venues are usually good. We also attended nationals this year for the second time and our kids had a fantastic time. This competition truly cares about the kids and the experiences they have.
We LOVE Legacy! We have attended both regionals and nationals many years in a row. Always a well scheduled, well ru and FAIR competition. My students beg every year to attend! Thank you David Sanders for all your hard work to keep a great event running AND for you or your staff returning phone calls and emails ao promtly. I am forever grateful for the experiences my students have had at your events over the years. Looking forward to your event in Bloomington MN in a few weeks!!!
We attended the Milwaukee/West Bend Regional this past weekend & had a great experience. The competition was on time or early the entire weekend, which was great. The backstage staff was energetic & fun & extremely helpful. The judges were excited about every routine & engaged in the dancing. Judging was tough (not a lot of platinums were given out) but fair. The videotaping ban was strictly enforced (we actually saw a staff member tell dancers points would be deducted because other team members were videotaping), and I appreciate that Legacy takes that rule seriously. Awards were run at a good pace, and it was clear that the competition wanted dancers to have a positive experience. This is truly one of my favorite competitions & I hope our studio will return next year.
This is the third year we've attended Legacy. The first year we were pretty happy. The second year, we noticed a LOT of leveling down. Very obvious stuff. It was so disappointing to see that. And that nothing was done about it. (To be fair, no one does.) It's disappointing that the rules are in place - but no one enforces them. Sure, there's some interpretation there, but some things are very clear. Anyway, that's not why I gave you two stars. Once again, we experienced the leveling down. But, the event was well organized, as always. It was run smoothly, etc. But there was a judge who was NASTY on our critiques. She was condescending and rude. The critiques she had were not necessarily wrong - as far as content - but her delivery was not constructive at all. Our studio owner will be contacting you. I'm leaving my review and rating as is because the experience really was not a great one. However, our studio owner did speak with Mr. Sanders and steps are being taken to ensure that the judging situation never happens again. We appreciate that. To say that the judges comments were inappropriate would be putting it mildly. So we are glad to know that are concerns are being taken seriously. Thank you.
We have attended Legacy since their very first year both regionally and nationally. If there was a problem, I brought it to the attention of owner/director and it was fixed immediately. I love that there is always a tap judge on the panel, as very few competitions offer one. The staff overall has been helpful, kind, and easy going. Again, if I had a problem with a staff member, or a judge, I brought it to the attention of the owner and he dealt with his employee accordingly (which will include firing them for the next season if warranted) I know that the owner, like myself, have been doing competitions for a long time and fully understands all sides of the event. The venue is safe for the dancers, the event runs ahead of schedule the majority of the time, when I call their number it is usually the owner who answers, the critiques are specific and helpful. My students and parents at my studio also speak highly of Legacy, it is one of their favorite competitions.
I don\'t really get the hype about this competition. My studio attends Legacy every year and sometimes the judging can be inconsistent, but I like how most of the judges like to give facial feedback instead of giving a blank face because it is much more encouraging. I have noticed that multiple times we receive pins that will have a few of the wrong award thrown in. Also, the music is almost always difficult to hear while being onstage which is frustrating as a dancer because it is harder to have better musicality. It is an okay competition to attend although I am disappointed that my studio attends every year.
Sorry to hear you\'ve had some issues with us. We\'d like you to be thrilled to attend every year. Here are 2 quick solutions to problems you mentioned. If pins are wrong, bring them right to the awards person and they will happily exchange them for you. If stage volume is to low tell the stage manager and our sound man will gladly raise the volume as our stage monitors function independently from our \"house\" volume. It is always our intention to make evryone\'s experience with us as positive as possible. Don\'t be afraid to make things right at the event. Thanks for the input.
Great comp and we love to go every year. It is a MUST on our competition schedule!
Happy to hear this. Thanks for the review.
My studio has been attending Legacy Dance Championship in Ft. Lauderdale for many years. They have always held a great and professional competition. Great staff, fair judges, friendly atmosphere, and routines are always on schedule.
Thanks for the great review:)
Attended the Nationals Event in Orlando. It was ok but nothing spectacular...Our team had been to Regionals that were way more exciting. Either way the kids did well, scoring seemed fair and prizes were good. Also, the staff and judges should take smoke breaks somewhere where the kids cannot see, doesn\'t set a very good example at all.
Thanks for the input. Can\'t improve without it. Will definitely work on building excitement. Many new things already in the works.
Most certainly will not be taking my dancers back to this competition, while back stage staff were lovely the MC made far to many mistakes during awards both confusing and upsetting my dancers and parents, which makes it really hard to explain the process as a teacher. I can not see us returning.
Sorry you feel this way. I cannot be at every event as we run 4 a weekend, but it is my understanding that the MC mixed up or dropped awards pages and started over rather then trying to pick up where he left off. I understand how that could be confusing and frustrating. This is not the norm and I hope you will give us another try.
We just returned from attending the Wisconsin Dells Nationals, and it was a great experience! The staff was friendly, kind & helpful. The backstage crew kept the kids laughing with their singing & dancing, and one of the backstage guys even offered to put props on stage for us. Judging was fair & consistent with what we saw at the regional & at other competitions. Awards were generous, and pictures and video were high quality. We had a schedule almost a month before the competition, and all communications I saw (I am a parent, not a teacher or studio owner) were professional & helpful. I simply cannot say enough good things about this competition, and I will definitely ask our studio owner if we can return next year!!!
Thanks for the kind & thoughtful review:)
We have been to Legacy a couple times and always enjoyed it.
Thanks for the kind review:)
When my studio went to legacy we were disappointed. They were very unorganized backstage and at the award ceremony there were many problems. They announced a dance platinum that got gold. We were given a gold trophy for a dance that received elite gold. also on our studio plaque some dances were not included. Overall we will never be going to another legacy event.
Sorry to hear you were disappointed. The Platinum call was immediately corrected on stage to the proper medal (Gold) with an apology for making the improper call. I don\'t know why you received the wrong trophy for your elite gold, but that could\'ve been exchanged for the proper trophy at the event. Studio plaques only include group dances, not solos & duet/trios. We pride ourselves on being organized and hope you understand that when reading medal placements from a score sheet human error does occur every once in a blue moon, but is always corrected. I apologize once again for our \"Steve Harvey\" moment.
The worst one we went to this year. Sorry we won\'t be going back and wasting money on this one.
Sorry to hear we didn\'t live up to your expectations. Hard for us to improve or fix problems when you don\'t specify issues.

Legacy is and always has been one of our favorite competitions!! Some of these reviews truly boggle my mind and I am left baffled questioning how anyone can have anything negative to say. We have been attending Legacy for many years and my experience has always been a positive enjoyable one! The St. Louis competition is always a big one yet the schedule always seems to be carefully thought out and has a great flow to it. The staff I have encountered has been friendly and has always had smiles on their faces. This year my daughter and a few of the other girls from our studio had a big event Saturday night through their school district and we were nervous that we would be forced to miss the competition but Legacy went above and beyond to make sure the schedule was created in a way that the girls could do both! I also believe this is one of the only competitions that truly appreciate dance and respect the dedication studios and students have for this sport. Their prize money is more then any other competition I have been too and we have never had to pay a title fee for my daughter\'s solo. I really can\'t say enough how much we love Legacy and I want to thank them for always making us feel welcome, always being professional, and most importantly always leaving our kids feeling positive and encouraged!!!
Thank you for your kind & honest revue. We do bend over backwards to please and it\'s nice to see it acknowledged in print. Unfortunately sites like this just seem to bring out people that were unhappy with their scores and look to do harm by spewing lies. Nothing we can do about it except hope that more people like yourself post reviews and the public is smart enough to sort out truth from fiction. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you at our events in the future.
What a horrible event! We went to this competition last year and many didn\'t like it then. The studio owner decided to give it one more try. Legacy can rest assured they are still a horrible dance competition. Also just to step off topic for a brief moment I can not believe the response to the customers post below. This so an owner to a business responding this way? Wow First the staff is rude and I did not see the owner there. I opened the door for the gentleman who was working on the stage with glasses no response. They dos not list the judges or their credentials. These people could be greeters st Walmart we don\'t know. Who are these people are and what are their credentials. Next out of 68 numbers in third awards session 60 were awarded platinum a and 8 elite gold. Obviously somethings wrong here. It was the same the rest of the comp I just happened to count that one. Like the reviewer said below their were no judges listed nor their bios so I am sure they didn\'t even know what they were talking about. At that point just give everyone a platinum and call it a day. I agree also with the lyrics... Toy Soldier by Brittany Speats I believe was the song of one the soloist that was not edited at all and am still took first and a title. With my six year old listening \"when ***ches coming over\" continuously throughout the song it starts to annoy me. This competition also started on a Friday night, 7 am Saturday morning -11 pm, 6:30 Sunday morning until late. Way to many people so again not enough dressing rooms space as others have said. This is the competition just taking advantage to make more money instead of cutting it off at an appropriate level. The audience was full no where for parents to sit, no dressing room space, so extremely hot all because of to many people. Go elsewhere for a competition look at th reviews and take the hint. There are to many great ones to settle!! last sessions they
Sorry to hear we didn\'t meet your expectations. Judges are announced at our events. They were Danny Tidwell (yes Travis Walls brother & Denise Walls son), Val Hoffmann & Andrew Greenwood. All platinums were earned. There were very strong schools at this event. You also posted we started our event at 7am on Sat & 6:30am on Sun, those were the times our doors opened, start times were actually 8am & 7:30am respectively. We didn\'t have anyone working our stage that wore glasses, perhaps a prop dad or school faculty? Our crew is trained to be respectful & receptive. Not a fan of the connotations of Toy Soldier myself, but there is no lyric in the song that says what you posted, you can google that. Additional dressing space was opened up the minute word came down that dressing rooms were crowded. Sorry if we are not the competition for you, but we always do our best to make everyone\'s experience enjoyable.
We also had a very bad experience at Legacy, so I understand the posts below. It\'s unfortunate the responses to the posts below were so rude, but it really didn\'t surprise me.
Sorry to hear your experience with us was not up to expectations. As far as responses below, sometimes you just gotta call a spade a spade.
Wow to the response by the MC below. Please talk to someone who has had to respond to a negative post before calling into question the ethics of the reviewer. You admit YOUR truck driver lost programs and that they weren\'t the same quality as what you usually sell. Is it possible the person who sold them the program didn\'t know the price had been reduced? You admit that it is possible YOUR backstage person and stage manager may have been vaping/texting. You admit that routines went out of order, but \"You don\'t screw up\". Ever! Ha. Now THAT is funny. You also admit that one of your judges talked more than the other two before you corrected them. So how is this person morally and ethically wrong?!? It is amazing how little sense of customer service you have. Next time, try not insulting the customer and show what tact and great customer service skills you have to all of your other customers on this site by responding in a more positive manor.
Joining today to play spin doctor. Ha...now THAT is too funny. Twisting my words isn\'t going to fly, it\'s in print for everyone to read. Just more validation to my truthful response...and no, it is not possible the salesperson made a mistake. Our customer service is second to none. This isn\'t about customer service though. This is about untruthfulness, slander & irresponsible posting. Go ahead & be dissatisfied, but post the truth.
Will not be attending again / backstage girl on phone many times when trying to check kids in / they didn\'t go in order / the backstage guy was VAPING all weekend ???? What???/ special awards were in NO WAY special just a list of dances that got a special ( special what? No specification , literally a list ) The awards were a disaster. He didn\'t have the right names and order was screwed up and he didn\'t have all the papers he needed ( said printer was acting up). Music guy played wrong songs, cut out two kids music during their dances / announcer acted like he wanted to get the awards over instead of making it special. They ran out of programs by Saturday afternoon and sold printed copies for 10 dollars of just stapled list of Dances. Judges were fine. One girl dominated , the male judge was by far the most knowledgeable and the third judge said nothing.
You are certainly entitled to be dissatisfied & never return, but malicious lies with the intent to do harm are morally & ethically wrong. I must assume that this is about our KC event as this is where we ran out of programs due to our truck driver somehow managing to lose 1/2 our programs between NY & KC. We printed FULL copies of the programs when we ran out, not just lists of dances. The only thing missing were the covers. These printed copies were sold for $2-...not $10. So this should be an indication to all of how false this post is. BTW, I was at this event and was the MC so I speak from 1st hand knowledge. If my stage manager was on the phone and trophy guy was vaping backstage they will be dealt with. When dances perform out of order it is because they are having problems & are not ready to dance. This happens at ALL competitions. We just keep it rolling by putting on the next dance that is ready, that\'s why we don\'t run behind schedule. We also don\'t do special awards anymore, we do excellence awards. These are the high scores of the respective dance categories, age & level divisions that receive a platinum medal.Awards a disaster??...LOL, I don\'t screw up names & go out of order. I also give 200% at all times as awards for me are all about celebrating the kids & their accomplishments. Music cutting out in the middle of dances is the fault of the music turned in, not the sound soundman\'s error, although I must admit he did start the wrong music on 2 or 3 occassions. Judges: I have headsets on to listen to the judges. They all talked pretty incessantly and I did tell the 1 dominant girl that she had to chill & allow the other 2 judges to have their say. In closing, I have to ask the poster where their responsibility is to the truth?

A few of my favorite parts of the Legacy Comp- Friendly, professional staff Qualified, well rounded judges Helpful, specific critiques Convenient/accessible venue Organized, timely schedule Care and concern for every dancer and their hard work Understanding the efforts from the dancer, parents, studios Unbiased judging Overall great experience My girls have been competing for over 10 years, this comp hit the mark on all points. They care about the art and not just the tricks. Love it! Thank you David Sanders for running a class act!
Our experience at Legacy this year did not live up to our experiences last year and we are fairly disappointed. The amount of numbers that were entered in novice and intermediate that were clearly misplaced was astonishing. I\'d really like to see judges move numbers where that rule is clearly being violated (other comps have started doing it.) There are no judge bios listed in the program either. I would like to see that. Numbers with turned in feet and poor overall technique were scoring very well - even parents new to this arena were noticing the inconsistencies. My biggest complaints though were: inappropriate lyrics and moves were allowed in some of the numbers (think N word, crotch grabbing...) and the critiques - we got ONE video with all three judges talking over each other. Why would we not have three separate critiques? It was mostly one judge talking, another agreeing, and the 3rd rarely said a word. I\'m very disappointed in this Legacy experience.
Love this competition!!! I\'ve gone the past 3 years and love it more everytime. The judging system is very clear and fair and the competition is overall very organized. The staff is also usually very friendly.
If your daughter enjoys traditional ballet do not compete in this competition. It seems as though the judges do not have an understanding of traditional ballet and the difficulty of technique.
This is our 3rd year going to this comp. And I have nothing but positive reviews each time. Our studio only took solo\'s to this comp. But I felt that they ran on time and that the judging was fair and consistent. I felt that the judges awarded based on technique more so than tricks. There were a few solo\'s that the music stopped on, so I\'m not sure if they were having technical difficulties with the CD\'s or if that was on the studio...or if the 2 dancers were even from the same studio. We were the last awards of the night, and there was an MC, and gal handing out awards, but the judges did not stick around for awards. So there were no judges choice awards. Not sure if that was the theme for the enrire comp, or just because it was the late awards. If there were judges choices thru out the rest of the weekend, then that\'s unfortunate for the late awards recipients. The judges said very nice things in the critiques for my dancer. That\'s the one thing that would make the competition better. Judges awards.
I gave it 5 stars because I was excited with the venue change from the Performing Arts Center to the local High School. Having so much more space to warm up, tables to eat at, etc. was much appreciated. However, dressing room space was still VERY much lacking. With as many rooms as are in that school, seeing if more could be used for dressing rooms was needed, especially on Sunday! We had girls that had set up their things in the hallway and cafeteria which isn\'t ok! Otherwise I have no complaints. Ran on time or ahead, awards are done efficiently. Judging seemed fair and appropriate, definitely generous with the minis, more difficult at teen and senior levels. Also had the full schedule out 11 days ahead of time. That is MUCH appreciated.
Our first Legacy. Would definitely return. Organized and on time. Spacing between entries left time to get ready. And the schedule sooner than we\'ve ever had one! The venue was super with plenty of dressing room space, parking. The judging was consistent. Although their was one production number that should have been ranked higher due to the fact that it was dancing (every kid on stage)and not just a musical theater production with props and about a third of the participants dancing. The awards went as quickly as they could. No where in the program or did I ever hear announced the judges and any of their bio. As far as judging, seemed like a couple of studios moved advanced group dancers down to the intermediate level for solos. Not very fair for true intermediate dancers. A prevalent problem at many comps. Very nicely run and hope to return to another legacy event.
We attended the Milwaukee/West Bend WI Regional and thought it was a great competition. The venue was nice, the dressing room areas were spacious and the event ran on time/early. Awards were well done & appropriate, and results were consistent with other competitions we\'ve attended. The judges were also VERY kind & encouraging to my dd who had a costume malfunction on stage, even cheering when she got it fixed. Best of all, we had a schedule WAY earlier than we\'ve ever had with any other competition we\'ve attended. I will definitely ask our studio owner if we can return next year, as this was our favorite competition of the season!
Well organized and fun competition!
I am seeing some bad reviews and i don\'t quite understand..i have been attending for several years and think this Competition is ran great and fairly..and the owner has answered any questions i have and we always enjoy this competition ..
Thank you for your honest & strong review.
This is a good competition, it was well organized and ran on time.
The Venue was nice but I felt the judging was inconsistent. Of the 5 competitions we went to last year, this one was my least favorite.
Review Has Been Removed - "Terms of Use Violation"
:)
We have been attending this for three years now. I\'m very impressed with the judging and friendliness of the staff.
Thanks for the great review. We will always continue to try to impress.
As always- this is by far from favorite competition. Great judges. Great caliber of competition. Never too large or too small. Great awards. Sensible scheduling. The nicest directors in the industry (even when you add three missed entries 4 days before... Love them! I just moved and they don\'t compete up here (but they should- it\'s a great market!) so hopefully one day we will get to go back. Can\'t recommend enough.
Thanks for the great review. Where are you located now? We can always try to add the Region to our calendar in 2017
FANTASTIC nationals experience. It was well-organized. The scheduling was unbelievably great. It was grouped so that people actually had time to DO things and not wait for hours in between dances at the venue. The staff was friendly and informative. The Showdown was fun, entertaining, and best of all, efficiently run. We had a fantastic experience with Legacy Nationals. I\'m glad we went.
Thank you for your honest & glowing review. It makes all our hard work worth the effort:)
This competition was not well put together. They gave out wristbands instead of pins which was really cheap and annoying. The judges had no interest at all in the dances they looked like they didn\'t want to be there. Lyrical and ballet were the favorites. I am not going to go back to this competition.
In the past we\'ve done Ribbons for 12 & Unders & wristbands for 13 & Overs. We will be doing pins for all starting this season. This will probably annoy those that don\'t like pins, but it\'s time to give it a whirl. Contrary to what you think, it does not cost us anymore and actually saves us time in ordering. As far as the rest of these comments, we know no one puts a competition together better then us or is more organized. There were some power surges throughout the weekend that messed with the sound system, but we still stayed on time & on schedule. In reviewing the overall high scores (anyone can do that by hitting our website), I certainly do not see ballet & lyrical being favored over other styles. Sorry you felt that way. I did hear from my managers that 2 of the 3 judges at Chanhassen, although on point with their scores, were not up to Legacy\'s standards as far as attentiveness and carrying themselves as professionals. These 2 will never be brought back and I apologize for that. Hopefully you\'ll give us another try in the future.
This was a bad event and a horrible experience for our girls. It seems that if you are not a senior dancer you are not recognized as a dancer at all. All awards are geared towards the older dancers although a majority of dancers involved in competitive dance fall into the 9-12 category. It\'s odd that a certain group is focused on like that especially when a good amount of the seniors will never go anywhere with their dance career there\'s a very small percentage that will. It\'s the younger pre teen children that attend the conventions and want to attend dance competitions. The awards should be spread out among all competitive dancers, of all ages. It\'s questionable why all the focus is on the older dancers...makes you think...
Perhaps you missed many of our award & recognition ceremonies. So to clarify, the events of the week were as follows: Throughout the course of the week 12 & Unders had their own Award Ceremonies. Novice, Intermediate & Advanced levels had their own Award ceremonies. There were a minimum of 3 Award sets per day. Our \"Showdown of the Legends\" (Finals Dance Off) included a Mini Division (8 & Unders), Int Petite & Adv Petite Division (9 & 10 year olds), Int Junior & Adv Junior Division (11 & 12 year olds), Int Teen & Adv Teen Division (13-15 year olds), and an Int Senior & Adv Senior Division (16-19 year olds). Results are easily viewed on our website. So in truth, the 12 & unders got more recognition then the 13 & Overs and always do at Legacy. We are the \"innovator\" of the \"Petite\" division in the 12 & Under age categories and I believe only 3 or 4 other competitions have followed suit to date. Here at Legacy, every dancer at every age division & level is special and important to us. The only accolade offered to a Senior dancer, that is not also offered to Junuior dancers, is a college scholarship which is awarded to a graduating Senior that is pursuing dance as a major at the University they were accepted to. I am proud & thrilled to be able to do this for 3 dancers per year.
Our studio does this one every year and we usually love it. The change to give away bracelets instead of pins was not a good one, kids like the consistency of collecting pins (at least when they\'re little) so the ribbons and bracelets are annoying. We always buy a trophy if my daughters dance does well and this year\'s trophys seemed really cheap and several were scratched. Their shirts were also very overpriced and not as cute as in past years. I like that this comp is always on time or running ahead of schedule! Burnsville is such a tough venue: it\'s nice to be the only event but it\'s not large enough to deal with the amount of people! No where to warm up or practice and the dressing rooms remind me of an overcrowded airport gate! Food is super expensive too!
Love this competition!! Event is very organized and the staff is exceptionally professional and friendly! Judges were right on point with their scoring. The abundance of scholarships given out was great! All in all we had a wonderful time at Legacy, which we always do! I would recommend anyone looking for a fair, well organized and exciting competition to give Legacy a try!
These judges were terrible. One judge actually fell asleep during the competition and when we got our critiques back, it all made sense. Worse comments ever that couldn\'t even be shared with the dancers. Telling recreational dancers that \"this dance is so boring\" is terrible!!! We have attended Legacy in the past and it has always been a great competition, I don\'t know how their quality of judges has gone to such a low standard.
All we can do is apologize. These were judges that have done a fine job in the past. I know the male judge was the big culprit and rest assured he and 1 of the female judges will never be on a Legacy panel again. I did listen to some of the critiques when our scrutineer raised concerns to me. I probably should not have released all critiques, but our scrutineer did say the scoring was on point. Once again, our sincerest apologies and we will take great pains to make sure this never happens again.
Pretty much on time, venue was hot and crowded. Music kept going in and out. If you need specific dates and early in the comp season this would be a good one to bring maybe just solos or something small. Judges are from cruise lines and are not working dancers.
Hmmmm....we had not one sound issue in Troy and the venue was so cold we were walking around in hoodies all weekend. You surely have us confused with another competition. BTW, what makes you say that dancers that work cruise lines are not working professionals? Are you aware that many cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, have full blown Equity Contract (the professional stage dancers union) Broadway Shows on board? Many professional dancers use the cruise lines as a way to see the world while getting paid and banking their income. How does that make them not working professionals? Some of our judges do indeed have \"cruise line\" credits, but they also have many other credits on their resume\'s, including Broadway, major Ballet Companies, Film, Television, Music Videos & touring as back up dancers with Major Recording Artists, as well as being respected teachers & choreographers in the dance industry.
Love this competition. Owner and staff are very friendly. Competition ran ahead of schedule.
Great competition. Staff was very friendly and on time. Awards were quick and I love the fact they award the kids with scholarships. That\'s a competition that I don\'t feel bad paying $500 to. We are going to their Nationals.....
This was our first year with a dance company at my studio, our first competition we attended was an AWFUL experience. Terrible judges etc etc...It left my dancers feeling defeated. Then we attended Legacy and the experience alone left my dancers feeling like their hard work paid off! From the judges appropriate and positive critiques/feedback to the staffs friendliness and helpfulness! This is a competition I will be attending furthermore!
This year most of the studios children were dressed appropriately, the music was appropriate and there was a judge\'s award on appropriateness! I thought a few of the dances\' scores were a bit off, but otherwise, it was great. I would like to suggest that they STOP giving out those stupid rubber wristbands for adjudication awards. Honestly, why couldn\'t our girls have gotten ribbons for their Friday dance and their Sunday dance? I think we pay enough to have ribbons given out all three days. Also, think about providing a texting service to let studio owners know how close they are to their number. We had to keep running in and out of the auditorium to hear the music of the different numbers and all three days the convention ran ahead of schedule, so it was a bit stressful. Finally, THANK YOU for making the awards ceremony a much shorter length than in years past! Parents, teachers, dancers, spectators, EVERYONE appreciates it! Overall a great experience!
Great experience. Wonderful staff: prepared and willing to take the time to talk. Immediate response through email is impressive and the schedule was provided well in advance. Assigned dressing rooms with tons of space. Great feedback providing both useful and positive feedback, all appropriate to share with the dancers. Some of the most enthusiastic judges we have encountered, which is greatly appreciated!! One of the judges consistently addressed technique along with musicality and presentation in such a helpful and positive manners that we took the time from rehearsal the following week to share ALL of his feedback with every one of our groups, something we rarely do. Legacy has been one of our favorites for years, and this year clinched the deal. We will definitely keep this one on the calendar!
We have attended this competition before, and Legacy does a great job. The venue was nice, not a bad seat in the auditorium. It ran on time, give or take a few minutes. That is quite impressive. The judges were smiling all the time and engaging. They ate at the judges station between dances with I thought was nice. There were not a bunch of breaks for them to eat. And they should get to eat. I would see them pick up their food, take a few bites and then the second the dancers came out they would put the food down and put thier full focus on the dance. My one complaint is they tolerated studio\'s leveling thier dancers down. It was very obvious a few studio\'s were doing this, and they should have used thier discretion and bumped some of the offender\'s up. It didn\'t really affect the dancer\'s from our school, as we dance advanced, but it really is unfair for an advanced team to dance in a novice catagory, as it hurts the actual dancer\'s who are novice. Shame on the studio owner\'s more so than the competition, but it was very apparent. Overall great competition.
In general I like this Comp. Ran pretty on time, in general awards were kept moving and judging seemed pretty fair. My biggest gripe with this competition is the location. It is a gorgeous place to watch dance in, but it feels like a bad day at Disneyland in there. Any open areas are blocked off to be used for dressing room space. There is no area to warm up or do run throughs so you\'ve got 20 girls dancing in front of a stairway or blocking the exit to a door. NO assigned dressing room space made for some fun encounters with other studios. They sell food and snacks but there is literally no where to eat them. No place to be found with a table and chair. Lastly, if you want to charge $10 for a program, it would be nice it would include some actual information- there was NO times listed, and nothing to tell me what studio went with what number. They were all coded by a studio number, but it didn\'t tell what studio was what number?! Not even any info on who the judges were to read during the down time.
We enjoyed Legacy for the first time this year. The high school was nice and they ran on time for most of the compeition . Judging seemed to be more geared towards tricks and not really focused on technique . Not really sure if this is a regular thing for the circuit or not because it was our first time there, but it\'s something to be aware of.
We recently attended Legacy for the first time. We were the studio that was added just a few days before since the event we were attending CANCELLED on Tuesday the week of the competition. David and the Legacy staff were so accommodating and event though it was more difficult for the other competing studios to adjust at short notice everyone rolled with it pretty well. The staff was courteous and friendly and so was everyone who attended. Our parents and dancers LOVED the event and asked me shortly after the event started if we could plan to attend again next season. Thank you Legacy for \"saving\" us and for a smooth, ON TIME and well run event.
We had a wonderful experience this past weekend at Legacy competition. It all ran so smoothly and the staff was so nice and easy to work with, especially trying to get those props in and out the auditorium and on and off the stage. SMU isn\'t the easiest but the staff made it the best it could be and relieved my anxiety around it all. Judging was great! I read other reviews that judging was bad. It\'s not at all! It\'s impossible for everyone to agree with judges opinions. My favorite thing about Legacy are the award ceremonies-quick and to the point. At some other competitions you sit for 15 minutes watching the kids dance to wobble wobble. I\'ve seen them dance all weekend and don\'t see the point in it. My parents loved it last year and that\'s why we came back and this year and will every year. Thank you Legacy!
Very friendly. Schedule makes no sense. Dancing late on a school night (Thursday) is not good. Big studios obviously given preference. No penalties given for10 min.Prop set up.
It was are first competition of the year.Didn\'t like that a studio was added two days before the competition. Also the way solos duet/trios we\'re mixed in with the groups.Limited dance stuff at table.Wish they would have all graduating seniors stand up in front not just one studio.Awards took way to long MC dragged it out.
This weekend we attended the Legacy regional in Columbia, SC. It was our first trip to Legacy event and overall it was a good experience. I would definitely go back. Cons: *The judges awards did not indicate which studio the number was from or the dancers\' names or anything. *Only advanced level dancers are eligible for scholarships *The schedule, while on time, is kind of all over the place. I prefer schedules where all the mini/petite/junior numbers are done before moving on to teen/senior but that may really just be a personal preference *The program does not have a key for figuring out which studio is which so if you see something you like you aren\'t always sure which studio to compliment. *The program doesn\'t have judges\' bios. They were introduced but it is sometimes hard to catch their names and credentials. I like having it in the program. Pros: *The competition ran on time *The venue was great - ample seating, ample dressing space. The only issue was the doors opened a little later than we were told on Friday and the parking can be a bit of a pain since the venue has a really small lot. *The emcee keeps the awards session moving quickly. *For once, I feel like we attended a competition where technique is truly valued over flash and show. I was never surprised by the winners in any category or by the adjudication. *The judges go up on stage to announce their own special awards (typically announced by the emcee at other comps I have attended) All in all it was a positive experience and I would be happy to go back to a Legacy event. EDITED TO ADD: Video pricing is pretty on-par with other competitions. Photo pricing is definitely higher than any other competition and I have attended and the quality is not on par either.
This was the first Legacy event that our studio attended. It really was a great experience. The schedule was given to us almost a MONTH in advance. That is incredible these days and I cannot express how much I appreciate that. The staff was very communicative and open with our studio owners. While I don\'t feel like they caught it all, they have taken some steps to cut out some of the leveling down cheating that we see so much of. They got to awards QUICK and didn\'t spend a ridiculous amount of time talking for the sake of talking. Every day ran ahead. The backstage crew was phenomenal. They chose a great venue with plenty of dressing room space and seating. I\'m glad that we we were able to attend. I\'ll be writing a 2nd review after nationals. - thanks for the fun weekend!
Staff was very helpful, from stage to store. Judging appeared to be fair and we were happy with the results. They did seem to give a lot of Platinums though---wish they would reserve those for the truly highest (out of our top 10 there were 9 platinums...16 dancers total in category). We like the invite-only Nationals. Good amount of scholarships.
Best competition. Best scholarships. Love love love! Compete here every year.
We recently attended Legacy for the first time. Through no fault of anyone but the weather it wasn\'t very well attended. Despite that, the staff kept everything running well and we actually ran early all day which with the weather being yucky was nice. The judges were great and the staff tried to keep everything light and fun. I would recommend Legacy to other people.
Just recently attended Legacy for the first time and was very pleased. The show was ran very well, everything was on time, and they kept things moving! There was a problem with the photos of one dance and they were great in helping to fix the problem. The staff was very friendly! Hopefully we will get to attend Legacy again. I would definitely recommend it.
I just wanted to let you know what a great experience we had at the event in this weekend! The staff was incredible, welcoming, informative, and just all around awesome! I had an issue with my picture CD and the staff fixed it right away, with smiles on their faces! Even apologized for it! Being a small business owner myself, I know the value of customer service and I have to say what an incredible and hard working team they have! They ran on time. I\'m SO looking forward to next year!
Not as fun as I hoped
This was our first time with Legacy. We enjoyed being with them. Helpful staff and the show ran just about on time. Which I really appreciate. Bravo!
We LOVED this competition!! The entire day was smooth and on time! Very excited to hear that we will be returning this year!
We were disappointed with this comp. The judging seemed off and when we tried to talk to the administrators about it at the show they were full of attitude. This one was not a good experience for the time and money we spent.
Sorry you felt that way. Rest assured our judges are all highly qualified and caring dance professionals. Please understand that when you compete in dance, you open yourself up to opinions. The only portion of a dance score that is not open to opinion is the technique score, which is 50% of our scoring criteria. Change 1 judge and results will inevitably differ. I don\'t always agree with my judges decisions either, but we stand by them because that\'s what they\'re paid to do. I apologize if our administrators seemed full of attitude, but they\'re not allowed to change scores. Our staff will bend over backwards to try to please, but they also must uphold rules & regulations. Their hands are tied in situations like this. I hope you\'ll give us another try in the future. Enjoy the Holidays.
I was extremely impressed with the competition. I wanted to personally thank David for allowing my daughter who has special needs to perform. I was even more impressed to see that David provides employment to individuals with special needs. I believe his name was Joe he was a great help. Thanks again for your hospitality God Bless!!
One of the best completions my studio has attended! Event was well organized and ran on schedule. Staff was friendly and was there to help with anything we needed! My dancers, parents, staff, as well as myself left extremely pleased and we are excited to return in 2015!
As a newcomer to this competition world, I must say we had a great experience at Legacy. The staff was very helpful and the event ran on time. As my daughter’s first competition she could not stop talking about how much fun she had.
As a dance teacher and mother of 3 girls (all dancers) I\'ve spent my fair amount of time in the competition circuit. Legacy has surpassed my expectations time and time again. I\'m not sure where some of these negative reviews are coming from but in my experience, They always run on time, the backstage staff is always friendly and more than willing to work with us on schedule changes. Awards runs smoothly and on time. Me and my girls are eagerly anticipating this upcoming 2015 season!
Very good professional competition. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful the entire weekend. We enjoyed the competition very much and we will definitely be back again!
A very bad dance experience. It ran very late and all the numbers seemed to be out of order. The administrator there was not patient and willing to listen to our complaints. Very unfriendly and we will not go again.
Is it possible you have us confused with another competition? You\'re registered on this site as a NC studio owner. We ran events in Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC. Both events ran on time or ahead of schedule. Perhaps DanceCompHub should require posters to state their studio and event attended. That would make it much easier to discern confusion, I\'m sorry you had a bad experience at any competition. They\'re supposed to be fun and a format for growth, education and camaraderie.
Sorry, but I was not impressed with this competition in any regard. Judging seemed off, ran way behind, not a helpful staff. We aren\'t attending again.
We were very pleased with Legacy! Their professionalism is one many competitions should aspire too! We are a medium sized studio and over the years have competed in a variety of different competitions, looking for one where every studio no matter the size was treated the same and we finally found that at Legacy! The scoring was very fairy and the judges critics very helpful. Everything ran as close to scheduled as I\'ve ever experienced. There was plenty of dressing room space and the venue itself was a great size!! The staff was very friendly and beyond helpful when one of my girls had a case of stage fright at the very last minute treating her with kindness and encouragement. We have finally found a competition we Love and will attend for years to come!! Looking forward to this year!!
Ran on time, nice awards, and fair judging. We will go back!
Last year my studio attended 10 different dance competitions. Of all of them Legacy was by far our favorite!! I can\'t express enough how doing Legacy made our entire dance season! They were very generous with the number of awards and we loved how they played the song of each of the overall winners. We also loved how they gave jackets to the title winners (my teen and senior winners practically live in them). Last year it was an optional one for my students but this year it is one I won\'t let any of my students miss out on so I\'m bringing our whole team! If you want a fun well run generous competition you should definitely try this one!!! *Also I read a comment below but my studio only brought 15 numbers bc as I said it was an optional comp and we did extremely well. I didn\'t think it was political at all bc we did better than some of the studios that brought way more acts. I thought it was very fair*
We enjoyed Legacy and will for sure go back! Staff was very straight forward and easy to deal with.
Isn\'t it amazing that studios can walk away from the same event with entirely different opinions & experiences. Great competitions on Long Island are always jam packed & over crowded. It\'s expected here. Legacy seems to handle it better then everyone else though. The schedule seems to be tediously planned out for a 2 room event resulting in very few conflicts. We were instructed long before the event that if there were conflicts that room 1 would take precedence over room 2 and to just appraise the stage managers and that dance would be held. This worked great for us. The staff was always friendly courteous & accommodating. Judges were on point for the most part and the competition ran on time or early all weekend. Gotta love the no-nonsense awards that always start almost immediately after the last routine exits the stage. The amount of prize money and scholarships awarded were more then most comps award during their Nationals. Kudos to Legacy for giving back to the kids and the studios. Keep up the great work!!!
Legacy has always been one of our favorite competitions but the last two years have been so stressful for our dancers and their parents that the parents begged us not to return. Too many entries, 2 rooms running at the same time with the same dancers required to be in both rooms, Productions performed on the stage in the gym instead of in the auditorium, Dressing rooms dangerously over crowded causing parents to move our studios belongings so they could have some space even though our dancers had been there since 7am, tarps not secured properly in the gym causing an injury that required an ambulance, backstage managers unwilling to work with you, etc. There was no AC in the overcrowded dressing room making it hard to even breathe yet when Legacy employees were informed of the unhealthy situation they did nothing. Judging was inconsistent due to different judges each day during the 3 day event. It will be strange not attending this year but our families happiness and well-being is our main priority.
Sorry the event was stressful due to overcrowding. We have added a 3rd weekend on Long Island in 2015 to relieve the pressure. Just some FYI\'s about other issues you mentioned: Productions were in the gym because the stage we build in there is much bigger then the actual stage in the theater. Tarps on the gym floor are laid & placed by the venue and is their responsibility, unfortunately we didn\'t see the unsecured area until someone tripped. Of course it was secured immediately following that, but damage was already done. We were constantly on the venue about the a/c, but like you, all we could do was complain to make it cooler. Judges shifted from room to room to stay with their divisions & categories. If they seemed inconsistent to you the problem had to be something else. Once again my apologies your experience was not positive due to over crowding. We are trying not to repeat the same mistakes by adding that 3rd weekend on Long Island in 2015. Please know that it is never our intention to make anyone\'s experience at Legacy anything less then great and we will always strive to improve. Thank you for your critique, it will help us to correct problems and I hope you will give us another try in the future.
I was skeptical at first because I had never attended this competition and did not have high expectations but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the level of competition and experienced a professional and fun competition! The best thing about this particular competition is that they respect and acknowledge TAP DANCERS! FINALLY, a competition whose judges KNOW TAP! We are going back next year! Rates were awesome - extra bonus!!
Thanks for the 5 star review. See you in 2015:)
Seemed to be a well run competition. Judges comment were ok, could have been a bit better in my opinion.
Thanks for the review. We\'re always telling our judges to talk talk talk. Will show them your review.
Legacy is such a fun and amazing competition! Great awards given, and given fairly. Love love love this competition, and highly recommend it!!!
Thanks for the 5 star review. Hope to see you in 2015:)
My kids really enjoy this competition. It is a lot less stressful than some other competitions and great for your beginner, beginner intermediate students. Awards are a little cheaper but the kids do not seem to mind. Some new venues this year were terrible but were told they would not be returning to them as they were not happy either. Photos and videos are overpriced. Stays on time and keeps things moving.
Thanks for the kind review & understanding about the venues. We will definitely never return to the Orlando or Tampa venues we were at in 2014. We will be at the Lakeland Center in 2015. If I can find a weekend for Orlando, we will probably be at the Marriott World Center Resort. I thought my photo & video prices were in line or better then most, but I will certainly take a look at it. I can tell you that it is definitely less expensive to buy photos at the event then through the photo website. We are running a sale on the photo website right now though:)
we will not attend this comp again. felt they gave highest awards to the studio that brought the most dances. didn\'t fairly judge. Lots of routine were inappropriate with music and costume and even suggestive moves and nothing was ever said. didn\'t like the venue...too small and dressing room space and practice space was nill. some studios literally just took over areas leaving no room for the rest of us. didn\'t like the merchandise either. way too pricey and not enough sizing.
Sorry you left feeling this way. Legacy never \"politics\" scores. Judges opinions & scores are what they are. The smallest schools are as important to us as the largest schools. \"Inappropriateness\" is a matter of opinion & we will never disqualify a dance unless f-bombs or something like that are being dropped or a routine is actually lewd. It is not a child\'s fault that their teachers & parents just \"don\'t get it\". The best we can do is low score the dance. I don\'t know which Ohio event you were at, but we will be at the Columbus Convention Center in 2015.
Great competition. Venue could have been much better. Heard the problem was fixed for the 2014-2015 season. Venue will be in a performing arts center vs. a small high school. We will go back again.
Agreed, the venue was atrocious. We were quite embarrassed to say the very least. Unfortunately, we were blocked out of the Lakeland Center for reasons unknown to us last year, but are back in Lakeland for 2015. Please accept our apology and give us another try. What you experienced is certainly not the norm for Legacy.
Good competition for beginner level competitors! No dressing room available we changed in hallway! Students were upset with just receiving ribbons! Judges really connected with dancers and socialized with them! Backstage managers not very friendly or adaptive to little ones quick changes but ran everything on time in order!
Thanks for the good review. We will be at the Columbus Convention Center in 2015 due to the McCoy not having enough dressing space. Other staff members informed me about our 2 stage managers at your event upon return & they were let go. My apologies for their poor bedside manner. All routines receive a trophy, so I\'m a little taken aback by the statement that the kids were disappointed that they only received ribbons. Did they not get their trophy?
Great competition overall! Fun environment for the kids! Love it!
Had a great time at this competition! They really kept the day moving and stayed on time.
Thanks for the great review. If anything is ever amiss, please let us know so we can fix it. Hope to see you in 2015.
New year, new review! Great venue, and dressing room issues were resolved from last year. Scoring seemed relatively easy-lots of platinums. I liked the special awards, and that they did all overall placements up to a top 10, so you know how your team did against the others, even if there weren\'t too many entries in the category. Expensive pictures, videos, and programs. I also don\'t like the \"Legacy Award\"- it is given to the studio with the highest average score. Which means it is given to the studio that brings the most dances. Overall, this one was a good experience.
Thanks for the good review. I wish I could get prices down on those photos, videos & programs, but it\'s tough to do a program of that size for less then $10. We do studio packages & pre-orders that are more cost effective as far as photos & DVD\'s are concerned. You should explore those options. I did want to say something about the Legacy Award because you don\'t understand it. It doesn\'t take a large school to win it. The only thing needed is 5 group routines in either the 12 & Under or 13 & Over age divisions. We take each studios 5 highest group scores in the 12 & Under and each studios 5 highest group scores in the 13 & Over age division. Highest point total wins their respective age division. Hope that clarifies things.
Attended once but then they allowed a studio to practically take over. They attend every year so win almost all top awards even when others are better than them. Not thrilled with this competition and they always choose the same small venue.
Sorry you walked away feeling like this. Legacy never \"politics\" scores. Judges opinions & scores are what they are. The smallest schools are as important to us as the largest schools. We certainly don\'t perceive East Providence HS as a small venue, but perhaps we will explore other options in 2016. Thanks for the input.
We were here a couple of weeks ago, and I thought the judging was extremely inconsistent. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the judges awards, performances that seemed sloppy received platinums, performances that were pretty decent only received gold? Didn't make too much sense. For the amount of money we pay in entry fees the fact that our studio's production group only received rubber bracelets for their platinum score was quite disappointing. Pins would have been nice, and since they were only handing out cheap ribbons, they certainly could have done that for these girls. I was happy, though, to see music cut off when the "N" word was used in the song, the studio should have known better. But they weren't disqualified, which I was a little disappointed with. Like I said, very inconsistent. Also, the awards were horrible...I absolutely hated sitting there listening to the judges spout off for their "special" awards. It sounded like they wanted to hear themselves talk, it caused awards to go on FOREVER!
Sorry you left feeling this way. I certainly don\'t agree with my judges all the time either. Please understand that aside from technique score, when you compete you open yourself up to 3 judges opinions. Every routine does in fact receive a trophy for their performance and each member of the group receives either a \"Legacy Ribbon\" in the 12 & Under age divisions, or a \"Legacy Bracelet\" in the 13 & Over age divisions. Thanks for commending us in regards to shutting off music. We didn\'t disqualify in that situation because we don\'t like to fault children for the indiscretion of their teacher or choreographer. I\'m sure their music getting shut off & receiving scores lower then they\'re used to was message enough. My apologies if the judges felt the need to overstay their welcome during special awards. Special awards are supposed to go quick. With the advent of Novice, Intermediate & Advanced levels, awards take longer then in the past because you have to shake down the Top 10\'s in all 3 levels. Hope you\'ll give us another try.

Fair judging, even though its kind of on the easy side. Very small competition.
Thanks for the good review. With the advent of Novice, Intermediate & Advanced levels it\'s certainly easier to obtain Elite Gold & Platinum medals. What\'s most important is the judges get those Top 10\'s right....so when you say \"fair judging\", I assume they did. Hope to see you in 2015.
One of the worst competitions I have been to in 10 years! Half way through the competition they ran out of ribbons for the groups and started giving out awful rubber bracelets. The clothing and photography were over priced and very poor quality. There was clear favoritism for the studios that attend their nationals. Major dressing room issues. One studio duct taped off an area for their studio and moved other studios stuff to do it. Several studios complained and the offending studio still won the sportsmanship award. Had mega studios entering routines in all three levels Advanced, Intermediate and Novice with the same dancers so they could win everything. Very sad. Poorly run. Awards were way too long and they didn\'t run on time at all. Several tunes I observed the judges not paying attention during our studios routines. They were leaning over talking to each other and not even looking at the stage. Very unimpressed!
Sorry you left feeling this way. Every routine does receive 1 trophy and the group members receive either a \"Legacy Ribbon\" in the 12 & Under age division or a \"Legacy Bracelet\" in the 13 & Over age division, so we did not run out of ribbons. Legacy never \"politics\" scores. Judges opinions & scores are what they are. The smallest schools are as important to us as the largest schools. The studio that did all the winning at your event has never attended our Nationals BTW. We are revamping our rules where levels are concerned. It is important to us that these levels are not abused. I have to take you to task about not being on time. This was a huge 5 day event. We ran on time or early every day except for one when we ran about 45 minutes behind due to an inordinate amount of props that day. I apologize if the judges were inattentive. There is no excuse for that. I will bring your post to their attention.
Loved this. The owner, Dave, answered all of my emails immediately and was so kind and considerate. Judging was fair and the judges gave a nice speech with their special awards. Prices are reasonable and competition wasn\'t greedy. I tried to enter an extra routine and was told the schedule was already sold out. Other competitions would just keep adding them. Photos and videos were expensive. I didn\'t like the format of the judges critiques as they are online. They would load slowly and you couldn\'t share them with anyone (teachers or students) unless you downloaded them and that took forever. We never listened to half of them because of it. We will return.
Thanks for the great review. We do offer studio & pre-sale packages on photos & DVD\'s that are more cost effective. I don\'t know how else to bring those prices down without sacrificing quality, but I\'m working on it. Last season was our 1st doing video critiques and we are already eons ahead of where we started. We can now do sub accounts so you can share critiques with your staff & students without downloading. We\'re still working on speeding up the loading process. Part of the problem is we use higher resolution then everyone else and I don\'t want to downgrade the quality. Thanks for the input & hope to see you in 2015.
Liked it a lot. Would go back.
We do not put judges pics & bios in our $10 Regional program because everyone does not purchase a program. We do however announce and intro our judges several times thru the course of the weekend instead. Our small schools are as important to us as the big schools. Always have been, always will be. Judges scores are unbiased as to big team small team. We don\'t even give them any info in regards to studio size. The little studio has as much opportunity as the big studio at our events. My apologies if you left feeling otherwise.
This was my first time attending this particular competition. I thought it was great! I felt judging was very fair and based on performance and technique. I did not witness any inappropriate routines from young performers as a previous reviewer stated. Once again the placement I predicted was the same as the judges\' results. The competition ran on-time and the staff was friendly. The awards were done very well and I appreciated the space in the programs to write my notes. I would definitely attend in the future.
Thank you for the kind review and addressing the previous review. Appropriateness is very often a matter of opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion. There would not be websites like this otherwise. As a competition owner, I can only hope that posts are truthful and fact filled. Unfortunately, some are not. Hope to see you in 2015.
This was my first experience with a Legacy Dance competition, and it will be my last. The rules of Legacy Dance Championships state, \"If dance movements, lyrics, or costuming are deemed to be offensive, too suggestive, or otherwise age inappropriate for our family audience, it will be scored lower at the discretion of the judges. Offensive lyrics, overly sexual or extremely violent content is not acceptable on the Legacy stage.\" Through observing the dance performances, and particularly those dancers that received some of the highest scores, you would never know Legacy employed such a rule. They certainly do not enforce it. If they did, I question how they define \"overly sexual\" and \"age appropriate.\" Young girls, less than 10, in too few clothing bumped, grinded and twerked their way through the weekend. And they were handsomely rewarded for it, receiving much higher scores than many of the other dancers who were more technically proficient, yet performed classic ballet and jazz pieces. Not only does Legacy ignore its own rule, it rewards those who break it. My 10 year old daughter, fortunately, remarked about how inappropriate so many of the routines were. Still, I cannot help but worry about the message sent to her by Legacy, that if you want to do well, you need to wear less material than a bathing suit and shake your rear end for 2 minutes. This was not dance. This was stripper training. I blame the parents and the dance companies. And I blame Legacy, who has a rule in place to guard against inappropriate dances, yet refuses to enforce it. Perhaps there is too much money at stake. Or perhaps it is sheer cowardice. Either way, the entire display was shameful.
Appropriateness is a matter of opinion and you are indeed entitled to yours. We have no control or knowledge of what is going to be presented at our events. The best we can do is make sure the judges low score what they deem inappropriate. You are correct in blaming parents for tolerating a dance company putting inappropriate material on their dancers, but you can\'t blame the competition. Your opinion of appropriate is obviously more stringent then others and your entitled to that opinion. Best of luck to you.
I am giving 1 star because the staff was wonderful and the competition ran smoothly. I suggest that a reputable studio doesn\'t compete in this competition if they find the sexualization of children to be reprehensible. THAT\'s who wins the awards. Apparently a young dancer can be spinning on a bent, turned in leg with a sickled foot. But as long as she has skimpy clothing and a provocative dance, she will receive a platinum. The young men are fully clothed, by the way. Sad , because we have a duty to teach our young girls to respect their bodies.
Thank you for commending the staff and the organization of our event. I\'m sorry that our judges panel and their opinions differed from yours. I agree with you that we have a duty to teach youngsters (not just girls) to respect their bodies, but everyone has their own varying opinion on what is appropriate and what is not. Our judges are told to low score anything they feel is inappropriate. I unfortunately can\'t control the fact that their opinion was obviously different then yours. This is unfortunate, because I certainly have to respect the fact that you commended our staff and organization even though you left less then thrilled with the judges. All the best to you.
Went to the Indianapolis competition. Competition ran pretty much on schedule. The awards ceremonies were few, but looooooong. They awarded quite a bit of money and scholarships. The judging seemed fair. We had some issues with people sitting on our props, eating food, etc. which should have been handled by the backstage managers.
Thank you for the good review. Unfortunately with the advent of 3 competitive levels, awards just take longer then they used to, especially at large events like Indianapolis. We continue to streamline as much as possible, but we do need to continue to honor the dancers achievements.
The owner immediately resolved our issues with providing dressing rooms for our dancers. The Legacy clothing was ridiculously over priced, the photography was extremely poor quality. At KAR we got a video of a routine for $12.00, at Legacy a single photo was $32.00 !!!!! The trophies themselves are SMALL & unimpressive.....even the \"Title\" winners were given a tacky, cheap, paper bag while the judge\'s awards were crappy ribbons and \"Special Awards\" were cheap rubber bracelets. My daughter frames her judge\'s awards ( they actually MEAN something to her !!!) After paying $100.00+ per solo, we expected SO MUCH MORE from this competition. Legacy just REEKS of cheapness.
Thank you for pointing out that we resolve issues immediately. I\'m confused by the rest of your post though as it is totally wrong. This leads me to believe you have us confused with another comp or are badly misinformed. Our photo pricing ranges from $7 to $20 on site, not sure where you\'re getting $32 from. Our title winners get a beautiful trophy, title jacket and usually a scholarship, again, really lost by this \"paper bag\" thing. Our judges awards & special awards are 1 & the same and they are \"Special Award\" ribbons. Everyone receives either a ribbon (12 & Under) or \"Legacy Bracelet\" (13 & Over) for their medal placements as well as a trophy for the routine. I don\'t know if your studio \"upcharges\" you, but our solo fees are way under $100 and all Advanced Solos receive a FREE title entry. In other words, there are no charges for titles. As far as reeking of cheapness, no one in the industry awards anywhere near the $$$ amount of prize money or scholarships that we do every weekend. Hope this clarifies things for you.
Our kids love to come to Legacy & our parents love his rules on not starting too early or ending too late. Fun event.
It Was An Okay Comp, No Complaints Just Not Impressed.
Professional staff, fun, energetic! Great experience!
David was very responsive when an issue came up. The staff was willing to help, too. Judges were great and attendtive...seemed completely fair. Loved the HD videos--worth the proce to be able to actually see my daughter\'s facial expressions. It was small, but it was ok. No different than any other competition I have been to.
I enjoy the energy of Legacy, and my child never had a problem with the judging. I would say they are pretty much a platinum or high gold type of competition, so there's not much distinction between the scoring. I also thought it was one where there were consistently studios entered in intermediate who should have been in advanced. I wouldn't normally blame the comp, but it seemed to be a pattern.
Horrible, horrible, horrible! The owner is rude, and just plain mean. This year he decided to over book competition. It ran for 5 days, used the gym and auditorium, was completely unorganized, ran over on a Sunday night to 1am. The lack of dressing rooms was disgusting, my son had to change in a hallway storage closet. My husband sent an email to complain about the problems and the response we got back was to find another competition. So that is what our studio is doing this year!
Terrible, terrible, terrible! Hated the judge who texted on his phone the whole time dancers were on stage. He completed the score sheets half way through. While he wasn\'t texting or filling out his score sheet before the dancers were finished, he was tossing small candies in the air and catching them with his mouth! Never, ever again! As a studio, we did not pay thousands of dollars for this level of professionalism!
Ran Ok.We will probably try them again.
This was our second year at Legacy and we are not returning. It was a very unprofessional environment. The dressing rooms were not assigned so other studios were moving our things around all weekend. The judging was ok but the venue was hot and cramped. Out of 5 comps this year this was our studio\'s least favorite.
2012 was the first time we attended Legacy Dance Championships and we absolutely loved it. They put on a great and entertaining event! My studio is one of the smaller ones at every competition we attend and this is one of the first competitions that made us feel just as important as the bigger companies who were also there. The entire staff, including the registration and video desk guys, were so friendly and they had my dancers giggling and laughing throughout the entire weekend! The scoring was very fair and the judges seemed very nice! My dance moms even performed a routine at this event and had the judges rolling! The giggling judges made them feel so comfortable on stage and they made my parents day when they acknowledged them again on the next day of competition. The Legacy staff are awesome with keeping us teachers up to date with new season schedules and they even emailed us with concerns about the dates for next season falling on Spring Break. We plan to attend Legacy Dance Championship again next season and we hope to attend their Nationals as well! Legacy is an exemplary event that we hope to attend for many years to come!
Legacy always runs a very well-organized venue. They start/end the competition days at reasonable times. They are willing to spend the extra money on decent places to host the competition and the quality of the facilities shows. Every now and then I hear a score that seems a little off, but for the most part I can say that Legacy is consistent in their scoring and has a variety of judges with varying backgrounds. I feel that the Legacy experience is positive for the dancers. Look forward to attending future events. Nice job Legacy and thank you for obtaining judges who give decent feedback which helps the dancers grow and learn from the comp.
Was ok.
We have really enjoyed our experience with Legacy and I have been able to talk to the owner/director even after hours :) I feel its judges are cultured and experienced. The scores have been consistent and they recognize our innovative style and uniqueness. We will be bback.
We attended the competition for the first time this year and really enjoyed it! The staff was very helpful, awards were quick and the show ran on time! A BIG thank you goes out to David and his staff for showing us that his competition is not about the money . . .it\'s truly about the kids!! We will definitely return!!
I am beyond disappointed in our Legacy experience this year. They added 90 new routines two days before competition, which totally threw everyone\'s schedule off at the last second. The competition ran almost 2 hours late both days, and the stage staff was unprofessional. One of my dancers got a large chunk of glass in her foot ON STAGE after another studio\'s prop broke and the staff wouldn\'t stop the competition to clean the floor adequately. I spoke with the on site manager, Mike and he did nothing to remedy the situation. After the competition I emailed the director David and have yet to receive a response. These people do NOT care about the performers, they care about money. I will not be bringing my dancers back!
Overall we enjoyed this competition. They ended up adding way too many dances at the last minute because they didn\'t have enough studios registered for their event the following weekend so they incorporated them into our event. That backed everything up but other than that it was a good event.
I loved Legacy LAST year but THIS year, it was appallingly bad. We were at 1st weekend in April and it was overbooked, two rooms, so there were so many acts, and the portable stage in 2nd room had the worst pics taken. I know dancers can dance \"anywhere\" but it wasn\'t right for the families that came to support had to sit on bleacher seats for HOURSSSSSSSSSSSS. All you heard from families walking around is that Legacy USED to be a class act and now it\'s another greedy company. Is that how it really wants to be known for? Please show us that a Long Island company can do return to its classiness and let performers be in the main stage where they can give beautiful performances and have beautiful pictures taken of their artistic efforts.
The owner does not deal with any issues that arise and is not easy to work with. We have gone twice and both times it was not fun. He is in it for the money, not for the kids and the art of dance. Our competitive dancers traveled a few hours to attend a regionals. When we got there we found out that no other studio had entered the advanced division, so we just competed against ourselves all weekend. Also, the owner doesn't regulate the levels so there will be super advanced dancers in the intermediate division so they can win first overall instead of being moved to the division they clearly belong in. I will never go back to this competition.
Judging was fair. Competition staff did not want to deal with dressing room problems, and did not penalize or disqualify a studio for refusing to share dressing room space. This studio also continued to bring their teenage boys into the girls dressing room, and Legacy allowed them to compete even after several warnings. Very disappointed. Ruined the experience, and my daughter had to change in the public bathroom.
Owner doesn\'t like to \"deal\" with parents and will tell you that so DON\'T call there, even if you are the only one from your studio going...
I really enjoyed this competition. It ran pretty smoothly and we all had a good experience.
