RADIX DANCE CONVENTION & COMPETITION

Mar 10 2025

Teen and senior were combined making the class so large it made the classes feel very rushed bc of the large number of dancers in the room. Eight groups is just too many for an hour class. The venue was small for this size convention so maybe that was the reason for combining. There were more than enough seniors to justify having their own room. Many dancers were dancing on concrete for lack of room on the carpet. Classes were very hip-hop driven which is fine, but the schedule implied something else. Venue was overcrowded. Competition judging was fair.

Caters way too much to certain studios. More than obvious in their scholarship choices...the same exact people from the same exact studios every. single. year. You can literally write the script for the outcome. If they don't recognize your dancer as being from a studio that brings them the $$$.... you can forget about auditioning. We have done both. Ran under a big studio=core performer. Ran under studio who does not attend Radix=0. Basically, by not considering independent dancers for scholarships in the rule section is admitting this. When will conventions start rewarding great dancers again based on "who cares where they train" and not on rewarding only the dancers from studios they recognize and bring in the most revenue? You don't know every dancers story or why they aren't attending a studio/team. Maybe they train at several. Why does this even matter? After 14 years of conventions I'm seeing this change in what they base decisions on. I'm growing tired of dancers being rewarded because they are of a higher income potential than independents or dancers from unrecognizable studios that are of equal ability. Sorry Radix, but you are one of the worst about this. Radix does have the best and most famous faculty in the industry. But ironically, when you put rewarding dance primarily based on revenue potential and less on the"core" of the dancer themselves...it becomes not about dance at all.

5th Radix - last Radix . Two tap classes for seniors ? Hip hop teacher was more concerned with her assistants than teaching the kids . Sr Core performers were disruptive and disrespectful to fellow students. Would go in teen room and take over there too. Tyce gave the worst class and half the class was calling out those same kids one by one . Scholarships obviously went to people with studios and who go often not talent based . This is coming from a parent of one of the previous core performers. Waste of money without Brian and Talia !

Normally this is our fav convention - not after NJ! The hotel is too small a venue . The teens and seniors again in the same room! No parent observers sold because room was too small and event sold out! However security at the door was letting some parents in and not others. They changed faculty at last moment and to be honest had less classes than other conventions. The core performer auditions were a joke . Actually picked seniors who barely participated in classes, were reprimanded for their attitudes by Talia, and were the mean girls but they are convention kids ! Competition seemed to be judged fairly and what faculty they do have is fantastic. What used to be a different convention is turning into a typical convention. And please find a different venue . Hilton was rundown and too small ! Oh , having a lunch break at the same time as hotel check out was very inconvenient.

Amazing!! Enough said!! This is a top notch convention and competition! We love the faculty, Brian Friedman is one of a kind. His classes and combos are so challenging, but good!! We try to attend at least one Radix a year if possible. The closest venue is a few hours from us, but it's always worth the travel!! Hands down a favorite!!

This was a fun competition and convention. The judging was fair and classes were tough and great for learning and growing. Would love to have daughter attend again next season.

We just attended Radix for the first time ever in Pittsburgh. We had a great time! The competition was fun and judging was fair and seemed appropriate. I liked that they didn't keep the dancers until midnight. The comp ended at a decent time so the dancers could get a good nights sleep for the convention the next day. Convention combos were challenging but fun. My only complaint is the teens and seniors were combined and had to learn the senior combo for auditions. I felt this gave the teens an unfair disadvantage..

I'm so happy that I get to edit my review and change all the categories to 5 stars. Originally we attended Radix in Vancouver Washington in the spring of 2017. It was a disaster. Even though it was only in it's second season, Radix had outgrown the venue so it was very crowded. So crowded that seniors had to dance in a tent in a parking lot that ended up flooding. It was a mess. But, the owner reached out to the studios that had attended and offered a free do over to all the seniors. This past weekend was our do over at a bigger venue and Radix did not disappoint. The teachers were amazing and my daughter had a great time. We did not attend the competition portion because it's so early in the season only one girl from our team was ready to compete. But, the judging was great last spring so I doubt they weren't just as good this time. I ended up being able to communicate with Gil, the owner, on a different website and he was very apologetic about what happened in Vancouver. I appreciate that he made good on his offer to allow our kids to attend again for free. I'm glad I gave Radix another chance. Now I can recommend them with no reservations whatsoever.

Radix is definitely one of our favorites. The competition is very professional with great judges and helpful critiques. Their judging is a little tougher than most, but we appreciate that. They don't just hand out a high score to everyone, but for those that receive it deserve it, which shows they are trying to better each and every dancer! The closest they come to us is 7 hours away, but because of our continued great experience, we make a point to attend! Their master classes are challenging, which is what my daughter loves and the teachers very helpful.

Radix was such a great convention with tons of energy and crazy good dancers. The class faculty was superb with the exception of the tap guy. My daughter loves tap and usually gets a scholarship for tap at the big conventions. This guy was so rude, terse and unwilling to help that my daughter asked to leave. She's never asked to leave a class. She stayed and it just got worse. The guy is a REALLY good tapper himself but he has no business trying to teach. All the other faculty were serious but fun and challenged our dancers. They grew a lot over the weekend. The competition portion was just ok. The stage was small and wings were hard to dance around. I agree with supers'smom that the judges defintiely favor contemporary. The judging was a little confusing with some of the really technical and high performance girls (not necessarily from our studio) not scoring well and other routines scoring higher adjudication. I'm sure it's hard to sit there and judge for long hours but it seemed really unfair. It also seems that they didn't consider the dancer's ages which seems to be a trend these days. We will go back next year for the conventions but have our dancers skip the competition portion.

The convention and classes were great. Instructors were amazing and the kids loved their time with them. Venue was great and retail clothing choices were top notch. The teams that attended were truly the best of the best - and for a regional competition that was unusual. However, if you are not performing a lyrical or contemporary number at the competition you need to understand you will not be judged as so. It seemed as though the younger ages were being compared to someone that should dance like a Teen, and if you were not doing contemporary or lyrical you were not judged for the type of dance you were performing. We have never witnessed this type of judging.

It was a fun competition. She and I were impressed with the staff they had, but disappointed in the advertised vs. actual faculty attending. She originally tried it last year w/ Nappy Tabs being the reason she initially wanted to experience Radix. Unfortunately both last year and this year, they did not attend. also it ran an hour behind, which I know can happen but considering the limited number of entries, it was frustrating. We will probably not be attending next year.

This convention was superb! The instruction given by each teacher was none like we\'ve ever experienced. The performances at the awards ceremony were amazing! Last years were great, but this year was exceptional! I can\'t wait to see what this convention develops into! My only complaint is that some of the advertised instructors havent appeared either year in my area, BUT their replacements were great.

The Radix regionals were great! This is part of Break the Floor Productions, so I expected to be well organized. However, the Nationals info and schedule were late and disorganized, as mentioned by another reviewer. My studio just finished the competitions last night and we thought the judging was quite inconsistent with any other regional and national events we attended. Not sure if it\'s due to this is Radix\'s first year. The \"Core Performer\" judging also seemed biased and favoritism involved. My kids did not compete for Core Performer, but I watched the junior top 10 improv challenge. There were same girls in the top ten that were also top ten at The Dance Awards. I was very surprised to see the top 4 choices after improv. There is one girl that looked lost and repeated same jump motions actually got into the top four!!! (Her solo was amazing but based on improv, she was definitely undeserving. (not a technical dancer at all, only supported by great solo choreography. The judging must weigh heavily on solos, not auditions and improv) Some of the top TDA dancers with amazing lines and movement quality that stood out during improv were not picked. Maybe this is Radix\'s way of \"rewarding\" certain studios to return.

We went to the Radix Regionals and it was such a good convention/competition and were so excited when we were told we were trying out there Nationals. However, nationals has been completely disorganized and nothing has come timely or when they have said it would. For example, the nationals competition schdule was to be out one week prior to the event and it was sent 4 days out. understandable that they are NEW, but when telling parent/studios you will deliver by a certain date it should be completed as it was told. We were NOT able to confirm prices, tickets, competition. The faculty/owner are all amazing, but need to organize info better.

Wow! This was the first year our studio competed and Radix was a highlight. We attended Radix in Concord, NC in March. The hotel was an Embassy Suites, which is ideal for a competition weekend and the amenities/staff were very accomidating. The Core conversation was not necessarily needed, but offered a good wake up and start to the weekend (I was in the Teen/Senior room.) Concord was a smaller city, which allowed more kids to get scholarships that often get overlooked. Eddie Strachan taught a wonderful musical theater class. Billy Bell was a pleasure. Talia Favia taught two wonderful classes, but favored a few of the kids from a large studio in the state because she often teaches them. Chaz was absent, but deeply missed! Tyce Diorio was a favorite throughout the weekend. Tina Caspary gave consistently wonderful advice & taught a challenging but fun class. Jason Janas had a lot to offer, but students were left confused. Jessica Keller was very rude! I look forward to ballet but she was impatient & seemed unhappy to be there. Competition ended at a decent hour, & the showcase wasn\'t too long. Pictures and videos were not overpriced, & we enjoyed the livestream option. Very tough competition, many high silvers given. Everything ran efficiently. Overall, it was a great weekend with a few bumps but we can\'t wait for Season 2!!

What a great experience for my dancer this year. She loved every class. The lower stage makes it easier for my tiny 8 year old to be seen, which inspired her to work even harder in class. She loved that auditions were multifaceted as well. The critiques from the judges was good. Chaz especially did a great job giving feedback that will help my dancer grow. The one thing I would suggest, if the Rookies have to be combined with the Minis-as was done in Vancouver, please keep them better corralled. Being as young as they were, they were easily distracted and would suddenly start wandering around while there was dancing going on. This could have led to serious injury.

Wow! What can I say?!? We just got home from an amazing trip to Chicago at Radix! I knew it was going to be wonderful with Eddie Strachen as the Director and the fantastic team behind him. I was not let down at all! The classes were amazing, the teachers were so approachable and really focused their energy and time on the kids. The staff was efficient and answered all questions promptly. I LOVE the fact that the teachers sat on the edge of the stage and had candid conversations with the kids about the importance of the \"core of dance\" and that this was carried through all weekend. It was refreshing to see an event about the kids! The competition and convention ran like a well-oiled machine, not a first year operation. We made a 3 hour flight to attend this event, and not one person who did so regretted their decision; in fact, many asked when we could go back. Thank you for a great weekend in Chicago, we cant wait to see you guys soon!
