There were plenty of things wrong, however, all could have been forgiven if the judging was accurate. But it wasn't, so it merits a review. First off, this comp. prides itself on being on time. Ha! There were so many technical difficulties I lost count. On top of that, they had 2-3 minutes scheduled between each dance performance. Sometimes the kids would be waiting to be on stage for their performance when all of the sudden there were technical difficulties. I liken it to icing the kicker-messing with their heads before they perform. The judging was ridiculous. Not only did our studio score the lowest it has scored in years, but other dances that should have placed or placed higher from other studios were poorly scored. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the scoring except that there were plenty of performances from certain studios that scored and placed pretty well. The prices for pictures and videos were really good, but you couldn't see ANY of the pictures before purchasing. For a solo performance that's not that big of a deal, but for a group performance? Seating was poor so it was difficult to see the whole dance (as in if there was someone a bit taller than you in front of you forget seeing the dance floor). I'm guessing we won't be performing in this comp again, but if my studio somehow decides to do this one again, I will refuse to give them my money.
Honestly, one of my least favorite competitions we've ever been to (and we've been in the competitive dance world since 2006). The scoring is so off compared to other competitions. The other three competitions that we went to this past year had scores that were very similar to each other. The scores here were completely off (not to say that our studio didn't do well, just scores were off). The judges at this comp also have the ability to add bonus points "just for fun" meaning that dances will score over 300. These points aren't really earned, the judges just felt that they needed an extra boost or deserved extra for whatever reason. This could be claimed as favoritism from an outsider. One of the judges stated that they were so memorized by a routine that they forgot they were judging...dance scored over 300. They didn't seem to like tap, except if it was in the novice category. Our large tap routines always do well, but not at this competition. They performed as well as they always did yet scored low. Also, be aware that the stage is super long so transitions on and off stage can become tricky. Honestly, the only good thing about this competition is the pictures...they were actually really good, though a little expensive (and I believe they used to be free if I remember right). One complaint, that could have been easily fixed, was at one point during the competition, a studio with a tap group started practicing on the cement, with tap shoes on, close to the stage while delicate ballet was onstage performing. You could not even hear the music for the dance onstage because the tapping was so loud, and no staff member stopped the team who were tapping offstage. Could have been easily fixed, but wasn't.
Aha someone used my account (probably my sister) and wrote a bad review. I thought that it was great this year and I am glad to go back to Majestic! They do a really good job on keeping the dancers entertained onstage before awards begin and the judges give amazing feedback. It's definitely my favorite competition from DX!
I was kind of disappointed with this competition being that my studio loves
DX. The competition was constantly behind, the judging was super
inconsistent and biased, and the awards ceremonies were long and drawn out.
My studio is attending again this year although I would prefer not to.
This used to be my favorite competition of the season. This year,
didn\'t enjoy it as much as we have in the past. It ran behind
Awards seemed long and drawn out. I especially disliked starting
giving out a handful, and then stopping because all the awards
done yet. I mean, as in every staff member walked off the
stage for 10
minutes and eventually chaos starts ensuing on stage. Take
a longer break
before you start awards if you need more time. It was
nice not having large
groups on the small stage this year, but I did
have a dancer who had an
issue with the small stage in that the seam
where it was joined together
was not even and caused some problems in
her dance. They also don\'t
break ties, and while I can appreciate
that, it\'s frustrating when you
have 4 or 5 way ties. 2nd place
honestly didn\'t mean very much when
there were 3 others she shared it
with. And in one division there were only
2 dances but they both tied
for first? Really? Only 2 dances- again, a
first place doesn\'t mean
as much then. The free photo CD is nice, but
I\'m still paying extra
for parking and overpriced convention center
food. However, probably the
most frustrating thing about this comp is it
feels like it\'s becoming
a novice heavy comp. I have a DD who competes
in Petite and out of like
25 dances in Petite small groups, her 2 small
groups competed against
only 1 other dance in the intermediate level. No
point in going to a
comp if we are just competing against ourselves. There
competition for the older grades in Intermediate/Advanced, but
many more Novice dances than I am used to seeing at comps.
FYI, this comp will give out High Silvers and not near as many Platniums as
many other comps. That said, my own DD had some dances score higher here
than they typically have at other comps? So the judging was kind of all
Fun weekend. Getting better each year.
I had attended this competition as a spectator and was very impressed that
the next year we attended as a competitor. I liked the format of separate
judges for intermediate and elite. The photo CD is an awesome perk. It
alleviates trying to decide which photo to buy. This competition is now on
our list of must-dos each year!
This is my favorite competition each year. The venue is fantastic, judging
is great, it always seems to stay on schedule. I love that they have a
separate stage for solos, duo, trios. My only suggestion would be to have
the days they dance on the same day by age. My daughter danced all 3 days
instead of having her dances all in the same day. Like Petite and Juniors
Saturday and Teen and Seniors Sunday.
It is the best competition I\'ve ever went to and I can\'t wait to go
this year! I love how the stage is huge, so there lots of space to dance, I
love the judges and I was personally close to one of them, and every dancer
gets a free photo CD for every dance!! It\'s so cool
By far the BEST competition we\'ve ever attend!!!
Great judging - big
stages - room for teachers - free photo CDs for dancers - schedules that
work - lots of award sessions - and many food options. I love, love, love
