This competition and convention was strange to say the least. I understand it's not your typical competition and more performance based when it comes to scoring but I got a The Price is Right type vibe. Definitely old fashioned. This is just my opinion of course. There are no adjudications given so you won't have any idea how your child scored unless your teacher gives you that information. Their site states no beginner dancers but there was clearly beginner dancers at the event we were at. What upset me about that was we already had to be there on Friday morning at 9 AM to compete (missed school day) and it ran late into the night and our kids didn't get to bed until midnight. That's unacceptable when they have to get up for convention classes the next morning and be there by 7:30AM. It seems a bit greedy if you ask me. There should be a cut off point for these events so they don't run late into the night. Overall our studio did well. The goal is mainly to at least place in your category so that you qualify for the solo overalls. The groups don't have overalls but one winner. I thought that was just strange. They don't explain any of this beforehand so if you have never been to any of their events be prepared to be confused. The convention dances were weird and not up to date. Very strange combos. The audition process to win a scholarship was just a pure waste of time. I guess I just didn't understand the need to audition for a scholarship. I thought that was supposed to be done by class observation. I don't know. This just wasn't my style for a competition and convention. Definitely don't want to go back ever again.

This is our 2nd year attending, first year competing. My DD loved it last year and loved it even more this year if that is possible. It is very well organized and ran right on time. Competing the same day as convention was a little tough, the kids are really tired by the end of day 1 and didn't get in bed until 1230am Sunday am?? There were no tour Tshirts in DC (shipment didn't arrive). Not really negative comments just observations. The teachers are great and my DD was really looking forward to it and came home saying she felt like this year was so much better. She absolutely loved the teachers and their combo's. She particularly loves the teaching styles and the fast pace at which they learn the combos. The comments about it being expensive..I don't look at it like an expense but rather an investment in her future as this is what she wants to do forever. The senior scholarship auditions ran really long this year and those in there didn't get very much time to rest/eat lunch before the next classes started. DD did wish they gave out pins to the winning competition numbers (she collects them) or even have them for purchase (besides just first place)
This is a great convention. Faculty is amazing and the classes are fun.
My students have gone two years in a row to Tremaine Vancouver WA. The parents shared these comments with me: Last year they came home and couldn't stop raving about their class combos and new tricks, this year there was much less excitement, it sounded like it was the exact same event as last year. My kids LOVE this convention, but after attending a different convention later in the year, we agreed that Tremaine wasn't helping them grow. Not to mention, they picked a hotel/convention center that was almost $400/night with very few surrounding hotels. I think next year we'll pick something else.
The venue in Atlanta in November 2016 was horrible. Water leaks isn't he classrooms. We have been going for 4 years and have seen unpleasant changes in the staff. It appears to be more about them than teaching the kids. One even openly criticized a kid. I feel the intentions was good, but the execution was handled incorrectly. The whole experience was different this year.
Have attended and competed at Tremaine for years. Daughter loves it! Me too! The competition is well run, on time, and any quick change issues are studio created (too many \"junior\" or \"teen\" dances from one studio result in back to back quick changes). The award ceremony is quick and I believe in the \"You have to earn it!\" theme preached by Joe Tremaine. My dancer should get the award she has earned even if the only performance in her category. The convention is great with teachers that are actively professional choreographers and dancers on television, movies, touring with singers, etc. (They know what they are talking about!)The teachers incorporate life lessons into their time with the students. One of the life lessons is during a ballet based audition where dancers are cut, then proceed to learn a jazz combination, and are then culled to finalists who win scholarships and recognition! Going through these auditions since she was a tiny junior has helped my daughter who wants to be a professional dancer. She has learned to keep trying and not get discouraged. Joe speaks to a MUST ATTEND parent class on Sunday mornings after auditions. I go every time and learn something new! He has priceless insider knowledge and will gladly answer questions during or after. The faculty show at the end should not be missed. The performance company and faculty dance but there are also students dancing. This is the only convention that puts on such a professional \"Vegas\" type show. It starts and ends on time and is worth staying an extra 30 minutes after classes end. My only criticisms would be: the hotel in Atlanta is awful; go back to each judge speaking directly to the dancers (giving us 3 different opinions not one \"group think\" chat amongst the judges), and the spaces need to be bigger to hold the observers and students and their bags! Also, I would love to see a top five or even top ten scores in each age division (JUNIOR/TEEN/SENIOR).
This was my daughters\' third year of Tremaine. The competition as always ran well. From a convention standpoint it has pretty much become all Jazz and Hip Hop. Joe preaches ballet being the basis for dance, then the Juniors and Teens only have one ballet class thru two days. And please pick a different hotel in Atlanta next year.
Not a fan of this convention/competition. Teachers need to make their classes more about the students (they are paying top dollar for instruction) and less about themselves.
Organized, Timely, Professional, Excellent!
2020: Year 7 in Vancouver. Some nice improvements this year. The whole event seemed a little "fresher". Streaming live video of the competition was a great addition. Always enjoy the way the faculty interacts with attendees at the venue over the weekend. Very professional yet approachable and polite. Great role models. 2016: Love the venue. Would like to see more entries allowed per studio. After attending the past the years, 2016 seemed the most disappointing. Classes were only ok, some of the teachers seemed less enthused than the past years. While I do enjoy the closing show, Tremaine seems awfully focused on TREMAINE vs the participants.
I believe this is a fine organization that can be a rewarding experience for dancers.
I am just floored by the number of people that buy into Joe Tremaine\'s catch phrase \"You have to earn it!\" Parents need to wake up and realize that it\'s the complete opposite when only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place are awarded. If there are 2 Musical Theater solos, one will receive 1st place and one will receive 2nd place. If there are 20 lyrical solos, there will still only be 3 awards. So, the kid who received 2nd place in Musical Theater walks around with a big trophy, while the dancer that may have scored 4th out of 20 doesn\'t know it, and had no ward for his/her performance. The 2nd place musical theater kid did not \"EARN IT\". We all pay a lot of money to enter our children in these competitions so that they can receive feedback. Most competitions tell each dancer whether they received a \"gold\" score, \"high gold\", \"platinum\" etc. This way, the kid that doesn\'t receive 3rd place or higher, maybe still receives a Platinum score and knows they had a very strong performance in the judges eyes. On the other hand, the 2nd place musical theater dancer may receive a \"gold\" placement, which means their score fell into a lower range. It\'s like getting an A, B, or C in school. If you receive and A on a test that you studied very hard for, it feels great. It may not fall within the highest 3 As in class, but it\'s an A nonetheless. I believe Joe Tremaine just doesn\'t want to take the time or effort to score in this way. Every other competition does. And the parents buy into it that the kids have \"to earn it\". What a joke.
Professional staff - amazing faculty - our favorite convention of all times!!
.
well organized convention and competition
My daughter\'s favorite competition ever. She likes that they actually follow their own rules.
Great:)
Fantastic! Well run and fair competition with a supportive atmosphere in the workshops.
We have always enjoyed attending. We look forward to it and it\'s kind of a must do for us every year.
I have attended Tremaine since 2012 and have gone 7 times! Everyone of those seven were absolutely fabulous! It is a great learning experience, and so inspirational! The staff is all so polite and the convention teachers are AMAZING! They really care about the dancers and want them to leave Tremaine inspired and feeling like a more accomplished dancer! The competition is great! They always run on time and the awards ceremony isn\'t too long, which is great! Because it can get hot up there on stage! Love this competition and convention and will keep coming back.
Attended Tremaine in Tulsa, March 2015. Teen age division. Love how quickly the competition runs, but IMO, wonder if the judging suffers as a result. :-( The convention teachers are very positive and teach very fast. Teen class was wayyyy too full. Need to limit the number of students or get bigger space. The tap teacher spent way too much class time focusing on her student helpers and even took time out to video the helpers many times during class. It was a tap class really geared towards non tap students, which is great for non tappers and a super bummer for those who really train in tap. The ballet teacher took some time to focus on some technique and that was really nice. The hip hop teacher is super fun and the Jazz teachers used very uplifting and positive music. The end show was a great way for the students to see the teachers dancing and I wish more conventions did this. I really liked how the audition process ran and how it started with a ballet combination. Ballet should be most important! Cost for parent observers was $55 for both days. Yikes!! Other conventions I have been to were $40. Overall I\'m at a toss up whether we will attend again next year. Edit: After listening to the judge\'s comments from my child\'s solo, I am extremely disappointed in the comments. One judge spoke the entire time and said things that I felt were inappropriate for a child to hear about their solo. These were comments that she could have said 20 different ways and it would have still got her point across and not been hateful or rude. Very disappointed in the quality of comments.
This year was a fist time attending this convention. Unfortunately my daughters could not take part in the competition due to a previously scheduled performance they were committed to. The convention was amazing as was the faculty showcase. We will return again and my daughters are looking forward to it!!
I was very disappointed with this season of Tremaine Dance Conventions. There were fewer classes offered in a very limited variety of genres. I do not feel that the amount of tuition that was paid corresponded with the amount of education received by the students and teachers who participated. Although Tremaine used to be one of my favorite conventions to attend, I feel as if this organization has taken a nose dive over the past few years. The faculty and staff are clearly focused on the \"performance company\" during class time.
I\'ve been a fan of Tremaine Dance and Joe since I was little!! This season I was disappointed. I felt the classes were not diverse for the students. Everything looked the same. I also felt that there were not enough classes for the amount of money being spent on the convention. The teachers were more about showing off Tremaine\'s performance company in class then working with the other students who have paid to be at the convention.
Great competition and classes. My only complaint is the way the competition schedule is at times you have a very quick change, and they don\'t seem to wait.
Competition was great The critiques were more on choreography then the technical aspects but the classes were great
Tough competition, awesome teachers and judges.
Tremaine is by far one of the most professional and personal dance events out there. Very positive and energetic staff. I love the audition process, feel that it is preparing young dancers for the real world. Tremaine will always be on our schedule of dance events and we will probably attend more than one each year because my dancer just cant get enough of it.
Great convention/competition! Talented, professional, and very organized staff! I would highly recommend this competition! The parent forum with Joe Tremaine is very informative and I highly recommend it as well.
This convention/competition has a great staff and the competition is clean. Th kids always come out with positive attitudes and seemed to have loved all the workshops Mr. Tremaine believes in \"you must earn it\" and I respect that. #TeamTremaine
Attended this convention 3 years ago, and it was actually one of my first conventions ever. For dancers just starting conventions/competitions, I would highly recommend it. The environment was very welcoming and the faculty was old school (in a good way). If you are more advanced in comps/conventions, it\'s ok to skip this one.
Positive environment and awesome faculty! Always a great time.
Great experience for both dancers and parents. Well organized, very professional.
Tremaine is one of the more \"formal\" conventions out there, meaning the teachers are good, but the energy isn\'t always there. Using so much ballet in the audition process is good, but the whole \"yes/no\" part of it is hard on the littler dancers.
Loved this convention and competition. The teachers and judges were amazing. They had clothing in their store for boys, and they had male teachers for ballet. Loved.
I think they could have done a lot better, they need to give more energy!
One of the best!!
I\'ve been to many conventions and competitions and Tremaine is BY FAR my favorite! The Teachers are all amazing, not only the best teachers in the industry, but amazing life coaches as well who really care about helping all the dancers learn, improve, and grow! The competition is real - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and that\'s it! So much more real of an experience than the competitions where all the routines receive a placement award. I am very grateful to have attended dozens of their conventions, and can\'t wait to attend more!
We have not gone to this convention in a while as they dropped the venue that was close to us but my older dancers grew up going to this and LOVED the staff Laurie and Doug made a big change not only in the way my kids danced but their attitude as well. Those 2 people will always hold a special place in my heart as well as the hearts of the dancers that they have worked with over the years. Miss them a lot!!
Lots of fun. Great staff and variety of classes. Only downfall is the crowded rooms during the convention portion.
Overall, my daughter enjoyed the classes. The teachers were positive and encouraging. My daughter felt that the classes were fun but not as challenging as other conventions she has attended. I very much appreciated the guard at the door during competition. He would not allow people inside until the dance on stage was finished. My daughter would definitely attend again.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!
My daughters just attended the Indianapolis 2014 Tremaine convention. They love the classes and the teachers. One area of improvement is that they would like to hear more feedback from the judges at the competition since it is our first competition of the season.
This is one of my favorite convention/competitions. Awesome teachers that love teaching kids, love the life lessons the add while teaching. Joe will not allow overbooked rooms. Joe teaches a parent class that has awesome info. The competition is great, and very fair, no fluff awards, you either win or loss. I would like to see some judges awards added. Unfortunately, the venue in Vegas is horrible so we won\'t be returning until they move venues.
Want to compete? This is the best. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. No trophies or awards for those that don\'t place. It is called competition. Love it!
Best out there. Joe Tremaine is an icon in the dance industry. He hires cutting edge teachers that are still active professional dancers. They all just truly love their job. The teachers don\'t just teach choreography, they teach life lessons. It feels like one big family. Joe Tremaine himself even dances in the faculty show at at the end of the weekend. They have auditions for scholarships and give away many each weekend. Class act all the way!!
One of my son\'s favorite conventions/competitions!!!!!!
My daughters favorite convention! She loves ALL the teachers and competition has been a great experience too!
My daughter has ben competing everywhere for 8 years, and I can say that Tremaine is Simply The Most Professional, well organized convention/competition available. Staff is professional and very nice. Mr. Joe is Hollywood Royalty. He knows and/or has worked with EVERYONE! He is the most interesting person, a wealth of entertainment knowledge with a warm sense of humor. Classes are challenging, competition flows, everything is always on time, and always worth the money. Keri's classes are like mini intensives, Laurie is the epitome of a mentor, Jeff is a true professional dancer, Derrick is so innovative, and the rest are so fresh and vibrant. Highly recommend the Tremaine experience.
The convention is first rate. It really teaches the kids about technique. The competition was also well ran and enjoyable. My daughter will continue to go to the convention for years to come.
We have thoroughly enjoyed convention classes at Tremaine, especially our juniors. Competition is organized & well run. The critiques & comments weren\'t especially helpful for improvement of the dancers. We\'ll continue to go back, especially for classes.
Tremaine was overall an ok convention. There was a large amount of hip hop, but it would have been nice to see more of other styles in the workshops. The judging was fair but some the comments were all about the costumes or the props. We miss the way Tremaine used to be. Not sure if our studio will be back.
Is overall good but seem to have favorites that attend every year so some favoritism happens. Judging was overall fair but often like the very sexy and inappropriate for age styles. We attended the SF several times and just gets too expensive to go and stay over Thanksgiving weekend. wish they would revisit schedule for northern cali.
My favorite event of the year! Absolutely LOVE the convention classes for students and teachers. All of the faculty is superb and very friendly and approachable. My students have a blast in the classes and auditions. I love that the teachers will get down onto the floor and TEACH the kids, correct technique, and give individual comments in a room packed full of kids. This year was the first year that we competed and it was also a great experience for our students. I love the \"you have to earn it\" lesson that the kids are taught. We will be competing again next year. Also, fantastic faculty show and great merchandise. Can\'t say enough good!
First rate convention and competition. One of my studio\'s highlights each year. Well run, well organized and the teachers are awesome! I love that they teach TECHNIQUE not just combinations!!!!
First Class Operation. Very organized. Excellant instruciton. Great time. Competition is top knotch.
Great convention and competition. We attend every year and we love it!
Tremaine was great. The convention was excellent- great teachers, plenty of space, competition was good too. Great experience.
We have attended for the last 5 years. Awesome convention!
