Venue was poorly planned, 1/2 of the seating was pushed so far right off the stage, they had to watch the comp on a screen. Judges were obviously biased to one “TV” studio. The competition didn’t follow their own rules and was a huge upset for all of the competitors. Huge waste of time, money, and effort. Do NOT recommend putting your children through this kind of treatment.

By far the worst competition I have attended as a dance mom and now a studio owner. The competition over sold the event therefore ran 2 hours late every night which made for a long weekend Sunday awards were not until 12am due to the fact we had a 3.5 hour drive home we didn't stay for awards. It's was very obvious 1 specific studio was definetly a favorite the direct even calling dancers, parents and studio owners by name. This same studio had dancers in the novice level which were definitely not novice the last time I checked dancers able to do leg hold turns at 7 years is not a novice dancer. I personally asked if the competition moves dancers up a level and I got the response that non of the judges had suggested it. It's sad that the poor true novice dancers didn't stand a chance. It all fell on def ears. The awards were a true cluster mess reading off dances so fast the dancers could understand the director. Oh and let's not forget all the issues with music. They would call studios to the music table and say the song wasn't uploaded when I know for us it was in fact there. This happend at least every 4 dances so don't tell me it was all these studios. The website to register is ancient too. Competition fees are much higher than most competitions as well. When checking in the first day they lady was so nice told us there was a room for our staff with snacks waters for us to enjoy throughout the week. They also said lunch would be provided each day on Saturday we got a text around 1245pm saying lunch will be available at 330pm I was glad that orderd lunch for my staff around 1pm since we started our day at 730am. I could go on and on but I think this posts a picture of how terrible this competition was. Spare yourself staff and dance families frustration and go a different competition.
Worst competition I’ve ever attended in the 6 years of dance. The competition ran behind all weekend with it running over 2 hours behind on Sunday, meaning things didn’t end until after midnight. One studio in particular was favored and it was obvious there were relationships beyond professional, with the Regional Director calling out prop dads by name while they were on stage, among other things. Special awards were limited. Because they were running so behind there was no fun at awards just straight to reading off routines at the speed of an auctioneer. There was no enforcement of rules regarding limitations on tricks and level placement. Nor were there any penalties for studios that were holding up the competition with not checking dances in timely. It made for a weekend that was not enjoyable and we will not attend again.
First and last time enter this competition. Not recommend to any studio owners and parents. They don’t give the right rewards to the right people. There are so many dance competitions on the market. You have better choice.
This was by far the worst dance competition I have ever been to. unless you are a favorite of theirs, I suggest you stay away and don't waste your time and money, they obviously were making their yearly returning customers happy. I was new to this competition, and I was the studio that took the least number of routines so that meant I didn't bring them the most money like the other studios did. I understand that at the end of the day, dance competitions are a business, and keeping well-paying returning customers happy is a must but also not fair to small studios. I watched routines that did not do so well get placed into the top 5 in the group category and was in complete disbelief, I also witnessed soloists being placed in the wrong levels, advanced dancers placed in intermediate, intermediate dancers in the Novice Level, so the poor Novice dancers had no chance which is unfair in so many ways but of course, the competition would never say anything to their high paying studio about putting them into their right levels because they want them back next year, they don't follow their own rules.
As a teacher and studio owner, there is no better competition. They treat the teachers amazing 👏 👏 👏. With that being said, the lack of understanding during covid when their events were canceled with no choice to be refunded was not satisfactory at all. They were the only competition that we didn't get our money back for which is the only reason we when in 2021 to get our credit. They had the event in an event center, which I personally don't like not having a real auditorium. Judging seems fair and everything else was good.
Marcy has never been professional in the many years we were with them. I came in as a new director and just followed suit with our studio’s loyalty to the competition. This past year many disturbing information surfaced about her, exposing her blatant racism. She has always come off as phony and I cannot hold this to myself anymore. After her racist remarks were exposed online my parents refused to attend this competition. And then she refused any sort of refund despite me kindly asking. No ethics on her behalf. She only denied all the surfaced messages and personal accounts that were exposed. She says they were fabricated. Hard to believe with many other peoples’ experiences they’ve told me they have had with her. Our parents lost that money because Marcy refused to refund. As a studio we paid in full for them to get that experience back at another competition. I could lead you in way more positive directions in this industry. Marcy is a complete phony. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere!
This was the 12th competition I have attended, and the second time here. It was a terrible experience both times. I have danced myself for years so I have a good idea of technique and ability. The first two days the judges were tough on the scoring, which is fine because it was uniform. The last day it’s like they didn’t care anymore, the Sunday performers were given 5times the number of platinums as the two days before put together. It was so clearly not even standards or distribution. Dancers that consistently place in the top 3 at other comps against the same performers didn’t even reach top 10. 90% of the placement awards were for Sunday performers. With block schedules it was way more obvious than the previous year when we suspected it. Some schools were consistently late causing our kids to get thrown on stage randomly and early, no penalties to other studios. Very elaborate prop and set ups were allowed frequently taking large amounts of time delaying the competition and awards for others with no issues. Studios we know are talented and place well didnt place at all. It was so blatant biased and disappointing. They hammered us with COVID precautions and rules ahead of competition but then enforced NOTHING. Will never go again.
We were disappointed in this event. We were the first studio of the day and competed in block. When we showed up at the doors open time, there were no staff there. It took me 20 minutes to track a staff member down, and then I still had to ask for the dressing room location. At our start time, we went backstage, still having never had a staff member approach us. Even though we were ready to go, the competition started 20 minutes late. The rest of the competition was regular schedule, and we went back for the first awards ceremony. Despite the fact that the emails said that masks were required, the venue required masks, and we have a mask mandate in place in our city, 90% of the audience was not wearing masks and about half the dancers on stage were not wearing masks (and the stages were packed for awards with no social distancing). I emailed Jimmy Robinson to express my concerns and see if they could enforce the policy they advertised so that our dancers could attend awards. He said they were trying, but we ended up watching awards virtually the rest of the weekend and they never once made an attempt to enforce mask wearing. We were disappointed in the lack of customer service and the lack of regard for dancer and family safety at this event.
The owner DELETED her apology for her racist texts and emails. What a hypocrite! No accountability whatsoever for decades of racism. Star Systems will forever be remembered as one of the worst competitions ever.
Marcy Tuttle and this company should not be in this business, or any other for that matter, for committing acts of racial profiling towards PARENTS OF COLOR at EVENTS and for Marcy’s deplorable and openly, disgusting racist comments. She essentially supported slavery by stating that, “slavery made black people stronger” and that, “black people use slavery as an excuse” for the discrimination they experience today. She also stated that, “she has a problem with the black movement and that it should have ended when Rodney King was beaten to death”. Along with mentioning, “why do black people want to protest slavery?”. I am absolutely sickened by what she has done to the dance community and I fully support ALL FAMILIES, OF ALL COLORS, SPEAKING UP ABOUT WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO THEM AND I HOPE THE REST OF THE WHITE COMMUNITY WILL STAND UP FOR THEM LIKE I WILL.
There’s a screenshot that shows that the owner states that “slavery made black people stronger willed and harder workers” After the recent events involving an African American parent and the subsequent release of information including the statement above, Marcy Tuttle and Star Systems should be no longer supported due to her racially charged actions and statements. No place for this kind racist behavior in the wonderful world of dance. Studios continue to pull out of her competitions and stand for what’s right.
The owner of this competition is a racist. She singles out POC at her comps and shows little to no respect for them. Adding to that, Marcy gaslights people to make them believe she is doing the right thing, despite evidence of her poor attitude. It's disappointing that her behaviour has hurt so many people. She doesn't deserve the platform she had in the community.
The owner is a racist. Please spend your money at a comp that respects people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientation, gender, ability, etc.
Be warned. The administration of this organization is discriminatory and racist. Protect your students, staff, and parents by choosing another competition.
Shocked by the recent events
The owner is a huge racist. Avoid at all costs.
I was also at the Ft Lauderdale event with Star Systems on 2/7
! WARNING! All studio owners, please avoid this competition at all costs! They obviously care about one thing and one thing only and that is which studio is paying them more! Which in my opinion It's not right whatsoever! And let's talk about how stingy they are with their awards! They obviously want to pocket as much money as possible which again I do not think it's right! Don't get me started on the owner, all I can say is she is extremely rude and won't answer any of your questions which I find to be very offensive after paying them a tremendous amount of money! There are many other competitions out there worth it and with better customer service do not waste your time and money on this one because money is all they care for!
At Nationals. Fixed from start to finish. Studios have directors cell number and text her on regular basis. If your not in that studio not a chance. Shameful. Based on who you know not talent.
Never been treated so well! Their "hospitality room" is the biggest spread of snacks and food (real catered meals!) I've ever seen at a competition. Star Systems understands our long days. Thank you to Marcy T and team.
Bor-ing! It's the little things like music between numbers and animated emcees that keep the energy level up. All our team dancers felt, as they put it, just blah, at this comp. Only comp I've been to where emcees where baseball cap and running shoes. That was weird. It all ran pretty smoothly, except when the emcee lost his place reading awards (repeatedly); it was just terribly boring. I certainly hope we don't do this one again.
My studio enjoyed our weekend at Star Systems so much! It was well organized, the staff was super friendly, and they ran on time (or early!) every day. The judges critiques were posted quickly and were very detailed. And as a bonus the teachers lounge was on point. They even had a hot meal catered in on Saturday! We will definitely be back!
What a wonderful weekend my students, parents and teachers were able to experience with Star Systems in Lakeland Florida 2/15-2/17. Marcy Tuttle and her staff made our first competition of the 2019 season Amazing. First class all the way!!
This was a really tough competition! But I liked that. I'd rather my daughter be challenged than feel like she just wins all the time.
This was the most boring competition my studio has ever attended. It was well organized but my parents & students could not wait wait for it to be over. The awards ceremony was so slow and non-engaging. I did like how they paid attention to teachers but did not recognize the studio owners.
Good competition. The biggest issue is they may need to limit the number of schools/performances, as the days were very long.
We had a great time at this competition this past season. The location in Athens Georgia is a bit big and overwhelming at some points but the competition itself was a great experience.
Our soloist was scheduled to perform at 6pm and did not perform until about 8-8:30pm. Awards were scheduled for 9pm and it didn't happen until nearly midnight. My soloist placed 4th overall but couldn't enjoy her accomplishment because she was falling asleep on stage! Girls were asleep on the stage and others just went home and let their teammates collect their awards. Awards were a cardboard cutout of a star..not impressed at all!! We will not be returning this season.
Very disappointed in the Detroit regional. Only 4 studios were registered for the entire weekend. I'm not sure why they decided to hold the event with only 4 studios. And of those 4 studios, no one was entered in the advanced division except for our studio (at least not in the Junior level) which left us competing against ourselves all day. They also seemed to give out overalls to every group / soloist. So if there were 6 girls doing junior, advanced solos; all six got an overall. Maybe this is something they cap at 10 at other regionals but with only 4 studios I don't think there were 10 routines in any one area so it made it seem like "everyone gets an award".
Very disappointed in the Rochester,NY competition this weekend. Totally overbooked! Judges were not even present at any of my daughter's awards ceremonies, due to the fact it was so tightly scheduled that there were no judges dinner breaks and the awards were so late at night they let them leave to go get some rest. Let the JUDGES leave to get rest -- what about 13 yr old KIDS? Therefore, there were no special judges awards, just adjudications. "You can read their bios in the program." Awards scheduled for 10:30 on Saturday night, then competition at 7 am Sunday morning? Then last awards 10:30 Sunday night? Ridiculous! We couldn't even stay for the last awards due to an over 2 hour drive home with school and work the next day. Also, junior photogenic awards were after Jr. solos, why were 13 and over photogenic in the very last awards ceremony? Why couldn't they be after solos, also? I would much rather be closed out of a competition and find an alternative, than to attend one so horribly overbooked. Definitely not in the dancers' best interest.
I had a really good time at Star Systems, but there are definitely some issues that they should look into fixing. I very much dislike the scheduling. Most parents will not be happy having their kid dance at 11am on a school day, and then dancing 7am-12am on the weekend. They definitely overbooked. Please close off registration sooner so this doesn't happen. It's just TOO MUCH. The music was quite loud, it seemed like they kept pumping the music louder and louder. It eventually got to the point where it hurt my ears on stage. It would have been nice of them to specify on their website which building the comeptition would be in. They simply said "Ohio Expo Center". Anyone form the area knows that the Ohio Expo Center is humongous and consists of many buildings. It was a hassle to try to find which building it was. Those three things can be forgiven, however, I am APPALLED that you would allow so much cheating. There was a studio that was VERY OBVIOUSLY leveling down. A novice dancer cannot just whip out 12 PERFECT al a seconde turns, switch leaps, and custom costumes. The whole competition knew what they were doing. You should be ashamed for not enforcing your rules. Those same exact dancers were competing in the elite category as well. It's a shame, they're really talented, but it's hard to respect people like that. I can't respect Star Systems for allowing that. I really did have a great time, I met new and old friends, the awards were very nice, the staff was friendly and helpful, the competition was professional and fast paced, but due to the blatantly obvious cheating and poor scheduling, we will not be back.
This was our second year attending Star Systems Talent. We had such a wonderful experience last year. However, this year our experience was not the same. The event staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The quality of the awards has changed - the placement plaques were much nicer to display in the studio, compared to cardboard stars this year. Also, teachers receiving jackets was such a wonderful thing and very appreciated. That was missed this year. Two of the three judge\'s critique\'s lacked, missing video critiques. Rule\'s have also changed this year with the modeling category and wasn\'t informed until after the event. I wish our experience had been the same this year.
This competition is one of the best out there and we have been attending it for over 20 years. It is simple to do all your entries on line and the office is great help if you need it. The judging is tough but fair with good constructive critiques. The staff is great and pleasant making the dancers feel comfortable while they are waiting back stage. Yes it may run a little long on occasion however, I love that it doesn\'t start until Friday afternoon and there is only one room of competition for the entire weekend. My kids absolutely love this competition and look forward to it each and every year!!!
I think this is probably the worst dance comp we have ever attended.
Their nationals were quite disappointing for the soloists. DO NOT DO THIS NATIONAL COMP IF YOUR KID IS IN MUSICAL THEATER. They lumped multiple categories together, including musical theater, which was one of the biggest categories. My child scored a platinum and didn\'t even place b/c it was in with Acro, Ballet, and I believe even hip hop and they didn\'t even do a TOP 10 for \"OPEN\" They also placed my friends daughter in Lyrical when it was a Jazz solo! Also, a platinum award was a ribbon...at nationals...a ribbon, it would have at least been a pin. I haven\'t had any issues with Star Systems until their nationals. Loved the venue and all but so upset with the awards ceremony.
....
We tried it again after a couple of years, and it has downhill from then and that took something because it was not great to begin with. Just awful. Save your time and money.
This competition has the longest and most annoying awards I\'ve ever been to! They also, have really late awards on Sunday night. The judging at this competition is tough but fair and there is also, always a lot of great competition there. I would give this competition 4 stars if the awards were not super long.
Enjoy this competition. Great awards. Loads of trophies given. Not just 2 cent pins. Parents and dancers feel they are getting their monies worth. Will def do it again!
Tried it again after a couple years. Sorry, it\'s still a hot mess, NEVER again.
Sorry to hear we did not meet your expectations best wishes for a great summer

It was a mixed bag. The staff was awesome, friendly and funny. It ran late. Two reasons I noticed, it took over 30 seconds to get another dance on stage. Add that to hundreds of dances and that is a lot of time. It wasn\'t because dancers weren\'t ready, they were in the wings. Awards could be shortened by not announcing that a dancer won a category when they were the only ones in it. It happened for approx 50% of the dances. Waste of time and trophies. Kids know they didn\'t really win anything. I thought the overalls were pretty accurate. I thank you for having a judge with a tap background! I did find the adjudications odd. I understand that you want a platinum to be earned. I like that. And very few were given. What I don\'t understand is the point spread. Platinum has a 20 point spread but EHG only has a ten point spread. Approx 80-90% of dances got an EHG. I find it hard to believe that almost every dance that weekend fell into that tiny ten point range. Not sure we would return. Ended by 7 ish on Saturday but ended at 10:30 on Sunday. Way too late on a school night. The scheduler should have switched days or added dances to Saturday night.
Thank you for giving us honest feedback. The single overall was a multi year request by studios that did not like that we were combining teens/seniors to get an overall or small groups with large groups. There is a set score and we have groups that don\'t meet the score. You have given us some food for thought on some other ideas. Beside the only overall situation . Have a great summer
Judging was appropriate & tough, less than 20% of routines received platinum. There are no judges/special awards. It’s surprising how many dancers were disappointed by this. The dancers like specials and prefer pins over ribbons; although the trophies and the medals awarded to s/d/t were nice. The sound system: so-so; the lighting: flat white light; the announcer: clear spoken but uninspiring; backstage staff: friendly but other circuits are better at keeping wings cleared; video screen was small and showed only what was on stage (we have been to competitions that include the # on the screen and have screens in the lobby as well). Overall, the dancers enjoyed the weekend. With a bit more attention to detail, this competition could rank among the top tier.
Actually if you look closely the backstage board showed who was on stage who is scheduled to go next and the next 5 routines that needs to check in . Thank you for your kind words have a wonderful summer and we do hope we will see you again
Staff attempted to help and were friendly enough. Had problems getting into building to unload prop. The doors were locked even after speaking to staff. There is an auditorium for use in this venue but it may have been rented for something else this particular weekend. Dancers had a temporary stage which is ok but the only dressing areas were curtained areas on either side of stage. When groups and dream duffels crowded in, personal space was almost nonexistent. Little space was available for run through prior to taking the stage. A few overall placements left us scratching our heads. Emcee was difficult to understand most of the time. A huge irk....NO personal photography! No pictures allowed during awards! The photography company took pictures and want you to purchase theirs which were quite expensive. Not the worst experience but would not be disappointed if we do not return next year.
We had the theatre last year \"the cannon center\" and we are scheduled to have it next year. They are trying to push the competitions to the exhibit halls and don\'t quite know what they are doing.....With that being said the dressing rooms was what they wanted put up and we tried to reason with them it was too small...if they do push all the competitions to the exhibit hall perhaps together we can guide them to what works! Anything is better than West Memphis, Ark we will never return there....I\'m sorry you were disappointed and hopefully we will be in Cannon Theatre next year...no photography or video taping is allowed during competition but you are allowed to take all the photos you want during and after the awards on stage
Thank you Marcy Tuttle for such a fantastic well run event , this is the first time I have been to a competition that promotes Ballet and how wonderful to share the stage with so many fantastic studios in Chicago who set the barre so high , the judges were fantastic they were interested and animated and the dancers felt totally at ease , listening to my critiques which were very positive their dance education and knowledge was evident . Staff couldn\'t have been nicer and couldn\'t do enough to keep us teachers happy , awards went smooth and fast and I love the way Marcy brings up the Top 5 groups - they split down the center and then starting back to front they lined up the entire group and that way everyone dancing was acknowledged . My parents loved that Platinums were not just handed out and they called this competition \" A Class Act \" Highly recommend -
we are glad you had a great time and thank you for your kind words. STAR SYSTEMS is a competition where you must EARN a platinum....we want all of our studios to return....but we give out genuine awards and use our entire award scale hope to see you again!
We recently attended the Pittsburgh regional event. We throughly enjoyed ourselves. I personally thought the staff was very helpful and friendly. The lady at the sales table was so nice to the kids. And as for the director Casey Tuttle I felt like he really took time to get the kids pumped about the awards they were about to get and he just seemed to genuinely care about them.
pittsburgh is a fun competition with lots of great talent.Hope to see you again soon
Star Systems is and has always been a Class Act!! Runs smoothly and on time at every regional we have ever attended, and we attend multiple cities! The judging is right on point and critiques are very helpful and enjoyable to listen to. Marcy Tuttle and her staff are accommodating and approachable even during the very busy shows. We have attended their Myrtle Beach Nationals a few times and always have an amazing time there. The venue is top notch for a national finals. I would highly recommend trying their regional and national events!
we are glad we fulfilled your expectations once again. Thanks for being so loyal to us and we hope to see you again soon
very well run! Thought the staff was very easy to deal with and friendly.
thanks so much....we are very proud of our staff! we hope to see you again soon
We attended this competition in Pittsburgh, Pa this year and my daughter and I say it\'s the best one we\'ve been to all year. We have attended this competition before but we missed a year and we were so excited to be back. The staff was amazing, they made it so much fun for all the kids and parents. My daughter said she loved how much fun they made it backstage for all the dancers waiting to perform. This is by far the most professionally run competition we\'ve ever attended. They awards ceremony went so smoothly and it was fun. Thank you again to ALL the staff for everything and for making every dancer feel special and important.
thanks so much for attending our Pittsburgh competition. We are proud of our back stage staff in getting the kids hyped to perform. We are glad you were able to return this year and hope to see you again soon
So sad to see a competition that was once so fun and fair turn into what it is now. They have not upgraded to electronic scoring and instead use paper and pencil. About 1/3 of our score sheets had scores erased and changed, so what we all thought was poor judging is now a very disappointing and upsetting feeling. When problems from our weekend were brought to their attention no response was given. Disgusted we made our parents spend their money here.
Star Sytems used to be on of our favorite dance competitions, but sadly, not this year. Competition ran very late after starting at 1pm on a Friday. This meant I had to take my daughter out of school and miss a day of work. Teen solo awards did not have any judges awards like the juniors did. They just seemed to want to get out of there. Judging was horrific and seemed very unfair. Girls that had weak technique, leaps and turns scored higher then girls with strong technique and performance. I saw dancers with feet not pointed, falling out of turns and weak leaps and they scored significantly higher then stronger dancers. Not sure what dancers the judges were looking at but I don\'t think it\'s what the audience saw. My daughter is a strong dancer and danced extremely well with solid technique and was scored lower then dancers with weak technique. Everyone was shaking their heads over the scoring. My daughter was devastated at the blatant unfairness of the scoring and was crushed. I understand judging can be very difficult and they see things we don\'t, but it needs to be fair. When studio directors and other parents are saying a dancer didn\'t deserve that low of a score, that should tell you something! I hope my studio doesn\'t want to go back next year!! How can dancers who score platinums at all other competitions dance even better then their platinum performances and only score a high gold??? Over booked and poorly planned. Awards ended at 11:30 and same girls needed to be back the next morning at 6:30 am. These are kids not professionals. After having to miss school on Friday for co p starting at 1pm. Awards on Sunday are at 10:45pm., with school 6 hours later. So disappointed this year. Speaking of judges, I have just been told by many parents saw the judges were on there phones throughout most of the competition. That\'s not what I call fair and honest judging.
I\'m sorry to hear that you are disappointed in your experience this weekend with us. I\'ll try to answer your concerns briefly. We usually send out surveys to studios what did you like not like etc. An enormous amount of feedback came that teen/seniors didn\'t want \"special\" awards, because at that point, if they had stayed with dance that long it was serious study they were interested in...if you have been to our comp before you would know teens and seniors do not get \"special awards\" the most common feedback we got was it \"embarrasses\" them. Some people are in this business for the money I as a former dancer and studio owner, take a totally different approach, yes we want studios to return to us, but if it means telling our judges everyone must get a platinum...that is NOT ever going to happen...or if it means changing our awards to platinum platinum first and diamond....that\'s not going to happen either. We use the entire range of our scoring system. Some other competitions only give out platinum awards to assure your return but not EVERYONE can be a platinum. Sadly your daughter should never define herself by a medal, a ribbon or a trophy. This was a different set of judges, on a different day and anything can happen. Your studio owner was told anyone that did not want to do their solos on Friday we would gladly refund their money. Most likely awards will finish early on Sunday unless we have dancers rehearsing and not checking in at the proper time. There are several sessions each day with awards where your daughter can take a break unless she is in 10 or more dances in that case yes, like any other competition she will need to be there more. And lastly what you or others observed is not an opinion of a professional...you paid to have 3 professional peoples HONEST opinion....there is far too much pressure put on the dancers to get that \"platinum\"....our competition is about doing your best watching others and leaving inspired.
I am extremely disappointed that this competition would start 10 year olds on a Friday at 11am. I value my child’s education and believe that school comes first.
Please consult your studio owner regarding a refund. They were sent letters that said if it was not possible we would gladly refund a soloist money dancing before 3 pm.
Not the best, not the worst. Had a good experience. Critiques were helpful.

We attended Star Systems regional competition this weekend in Houston, and we loved it!! It was a big weekend, the building had lighting issues , and Casey Tuttle and his entire staff were all so professional! My kids had a great time, judging was great, the show ran so smooth! We couldn\'t have asked for a better weekend! Thank you Star Systems for being A Class Act!!
We attended the Houston, TX regional over the weekend and I must say I have such respect for this competition. There was a problem with the venues lighting system that caused several delays. Several routines had to restart and there were many long pauses while waiting for the lights to come back on. The announcer kept us updated on what was happening and although he was frustrated he finished out the evening and awards with the same enthusiasm and energy as any other award ceremony. Our final awards didn\'t end until after midnight and the competition started at 7am. He started the awards by saying something like the dancers were so hot they burned up the lights! It was a perfect way to turn a negative into a positive. I\'ve been to other competitions where things have not gone right and the announcers totally let it affect them and the awards ceremony. You could just feel the energy and motivation was lost. Casey Tuttle kept it going and remained professional. The lighting issue was not Star System\'s fault. We went back on Sunday and there were no lighting issues, and the competition kept right on going! We love Star Systems and can\'t wait to keep going back!
We just returned from this event and I really hope we have attended for the last time. The judging was horrendous, every studio except two were scored extremely low. They awarded so many high gold medals that they actually ran out. Some kind of announcement was made about them not getting their shipment in time, yea ok. I would like to say, this is not sour grapes that our studio didn\'t win it all. I honestly feel the studio that did very much deserved what they were given. They were phenomenal and even had the judging been done in a fairer way they still would have won it all. I do believe, however, the other studio\'s were not judged fairly and many routines which should have been awarded elite high gold or platinum were instead given high gold and gold. The venue was good, except it was extremely hot, they did finally turn on the AC on the third day. I do wish however that they had offered some kind of vendor for food. They did have vending machines but since this is a middle school they were programmed to allow purchases only during certain times. If you didn\'t get to the machine during the programmed times you couldn\'t get a drink or snack. As always the Star System staff was friendly and the awards went quick.
I can finally sit with a clear mind and express my continuing and utter disappointment with this competition. For 5 years I\'ve attended and continue to be in awe of the poor judging during these events. I\'ve watched dancers fall, run off stage because they forgot their dance, blatantly mess up turns and jumps and be awarded adjudications much higher than dancers who not only performed but completed a clean routine without falling, messing up turns/jumps or running off stage. At this event I watched 2 dancers run off stage only to be allowed to perform again, a dancer who weeble wobbled and fell, receive higher adjudications than dancers who had seamless/ strong routines. Not only did they score higher but placed overall. Can you imagine that? It\'s not sour grapes just 5 years of watching this happen repeatedly. One year as judges critiques were reviewed all one judge did was complain about the costumes and say he didn\'t like it. I know at the end of the day it\'s a business but at what expense? It\'s hard I\'m sure for a child to watch these things happen, and try to understand how your clean routine was low balled and scored less than a routine with very blatant and obvious mistakes like the ones listed above. As this is a forum for reviews, I hope my review will not be edited, altered or deleted because it doesn\'t look favorably upon Star Systems. I certainly hope they look at this and realize that while those in the audience are not professionals we can certainly tell the difference between a piece riddled with mistakes and one where the mistakes are few and far between and only picked up by those who are selected to judge because of their alleged expertise. Stop discouraging dancers with your very questionable and shady judging and give awards based on merit and not favoritism of a particular look, studio or individual.
First I would like to say I\'m sorry your experience was less than expected. This is a forum for reviews and since you say you\'ve been competing a while I\'m surprised you only have one review. There are two areas I will address with you. When a child walks off the stage the judges are told...judge what you saw and either turn their sheets over or pass them down. The judges to critique the routine because this event could make or break a dancer...if she runs off and isn\'t allowed to dance on stage again for another month all she has dwelled upon is running off the stage, we like to build character and confidence, the judges are NOT allowed to touch their sheets from the first performance. I\'m not sure what \"shady\" judges mean, two of those judges have been classically trained since they were young children, one puts on a huge Nutcracker performance every year with children from all around the Washington DC area, the other young lady has traveled all over the world and still performs with the prestigious Odyssey Dance Company...and the third judge, we always like to have a studio owner because they know what it takes to get each and every dancer to the next level. We do not have costume as a score on our critique sheet so if the judge who complained about the costumes those were his personal comments and no points were deducted because we do not think costumes should be a part of judging a competition. Once again I\'m sorry you were disappointed, I know there has been some \"shake ups\" among studios in the NY/CT area and unfortunately the competition usually takes the \"hit\" when that happens. I hope you have a great year....and you have a better understanding of why WE allow dancers to go a 2nd time, and our judges bios are almost always in the program book...so you could see for yourself there was nothing \"shady\" about them - Marcy Tuttle -FOUNDER/CEO
My daughter participate this event for 7 years, it\'s a great experience.
Loyalty means everything to us! We are excited that you have been with us 7 years and continue to have a great experience. We look forward to seeing you in 2016
My girls had fun at this one and they learned a lot from the critiques. Highly recommend!
We are happy your girls had a great time. Its our goal for you to get great critiques from our judges. Glad this event was a success for you. Thank you for recommending us to others!
Will attend again this year!
We can\'t wait to see you in 2016!
Myrtle Nationals definitely did not disappoint!! Ran on time (in fact I believe early most days). Judging super fair and top notch industry judges!!!! Venue was perfect with plenty of dressing room space. Back stage staff so wonderful with the kids, easing all those back stage nerves and quick costume changes. The stage (oh that stage) absolutely GORGEOUS!! Opening number choreographed by amazing choreographers was a perfect way to open the final day of competition!! Can not wait to be back and do it all over again. A definite class act!!
Thank you for your comments! We are pleased that we were able to meet all your expectations at our National Finals in Myrtle Beach! We are honored to have an amazing staff and fantastic faculty for our FREE MASTER CLASSES.....Look forward to seeing you in 2016
Judging was fair. Didn\'t score routines higher to make everyone feel like they were a winner.. Like the consistent and honest scores.
Thank you for your honesty....we want our competition to be fair so we brief the judges on our scoring system, then it is up to them to do the job we hired them for. We hope to see you in 2016
This is always a good competition to attend. Our girls get good feedback from the different judges\' perspectives. The venue they hold the competition in is very good, large stage and auditorium. The dressing rooms here are temporary and first come, first serve, so a little bit difficult, but overall good. The awards run a little bit long, but they have many which is good.
Thank you for your commentary....were you at the Columbus venue? We have already addressed the dressing room issue for 2016. Sometimes the awards do seem long...as we enjoy interacting with the dancers...we try to make it a fun event for them without taking up too much time. We hope to see you in 2016
There was nothing that really set this competition apart from all the others. Lightly attended. Good confidence builder. Ran on time. Judges gave out great special awards. That was highlight of the day.
Glad you enjoyed our event. We hope to see you in 2016!
Definitely not the worst one I have been to, but it was very unorganized and ran extremely late!! This year was our second time to go and would be fine if it was our last. The judging was very fair
Our Hot Springs competition has yet to be considered a sold out event (but we are hoping to this year) which would make the day long. Hope you give Star Systems a try again in 2016
Went for the first time this year. Really enjoyed it! Well run and judging seemed accurate.
Thank you for your comment and we are glad you had great time. We look forward to seeing you in 2016!
I love star systems. The staff is super friendly & makes every studio big or small feel like their somebody. The backstage crew was so awesome & gave my kids lots of encouragement when they felt nervous. They complimented the kids & cheered them all on. I like the venue in charleston because we can walk to the mall between. The only change would be, cut people off after a certain number of routines. Start at 8am & finish by 9pm
Thank you for your commentary.....our backstage crew is composed mostly of dancers who competed with us as young people and are currently in college or pursuing a career in LA or NYC. They do make our competition fun as they were once standing in those wings perhaps a little nervous too. Look forward to seeing you in 2016!
Not my favorite, but definitely not the worst. Competition ran pretty late. :( Venue was not good...the school would not allow us to bring in any food at all. We could only eat what they were selling on site, which was extremely overpriced and provided very limited options. The school also would not give us any ice for an injured dancer. :( On a positive note, I thought that the judges were pretty good and the critiques were helpful, for the most part.
Thank you for your comments. This is a very beautiful venue, and we have held competitions there for many years. Unfortunately people bringing in coolers and trashing the auditorium and dressing rooms forced them to go with the option they have now. The school has their own rules, pricing etc. it\'s something we cannot control, there are many great restaurants near by and ALWAYS please go backstage for \"ice\" as our crew has the packs that are one time use...We look forward to seeing you in 2016
We just competed with Star Systems this past weekend, and they exceeded my expectations of how a dance comp should run!!! The judging was very fair, everything was very, VERY smooth! The staff was incredible, and very sweet and caring and our kids had a blast! The director was fun and pumped the kids up! We love Star Systems! And we will be returning !!!!
Thanks for your comments. Athens is a fun regional....we have some great staff backstage and out front at the boutique. We work hard to try and make sure the kids have a good time! Look forward to seeing you in 2016
Liked some aspects of this competition, but agree with many of the reviews; more attention to detail is needed. Waited hours for awards and our section was never announced. The director was apologetic but the damage was done. As a business owner I understand, he relies on his staff. Mistakes are made because the awards are so rushed; but students and parents are unforgiving....and rightly so, we are a small studio and only attend a few competitions every year. This made it impossible for us to reconsider this competition. As a studio owner I have to consider both the student/parent experience and the instructor/choreographer experience. My instructors felt the feedback was uninspired. When we get solid, helpful, professional feedback we like to let the students hear what the judges had to say-even if they only reinforce what has been reviewed in class. Many competition circuits, including this one, do not ensure the quality of their judges feedback (an impressive bio does not necessarily equal quality commentary), possibly forgetting that, ultimately, the studio is their customer. If we don\'t get the whole package: fun weekend for all, pins (or something!) for the students, exciting awards ceremonies and quality judges feedback, we will not return....When we find Everything in a competition, we return year after year.
We are so sorry that you did not enjoy our event. If you would like to discuss these issues please feel free to contact our office and speak with the owner of the competition Marcy Tuttle. She would love to talk to you about your experience!
ABSOLUTLELY LOVE THIS COMP! What a great experience I had with overall placements in every dance I competed with. The judges were really friendly, fair and kind! This is my studios 4th year attending and we are surely going back. Plus, the pictures are so high quality!
Thank you for your comments....we are so glad that you have been competing with us for 4 years and are returning in 2016!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Star Systems Talent!! What a wonderful weekend with the most amazing staff. One of the most caring and professional dance competitions out there today. We absolutely LOVE Marcy Tuttle and all her staff who continually set the standards high and provide a high quality and fair competition. This is one competition we will continue to be a part of and love everything about this program. Thank you Star Systems for being such a TOP NOTCH ORGANIZATION!! Keep Shining!!!!!
wow we are overwhelmed by your comments....we work very hard to be friendly, courteous, staff friendly events. We look forward to your return in 2016
Would rate this competition zero stars if I could. Logistical nightmare. Staff who didn\'t really seem to care. Unacceptable gaps in flow due to poor scheduling--the gaps were numerous and extensive (10-15 minutes or more at times). Several numbers with the same kids from large studio scheduled back-to-back. Inconsiderate of others\' time. When staff sets the schedule and sees an obvious conflict based on names of group members, someone should correct it to avoid being so disrespectful of other entrees. . And if that\'s not possible, then they should manage the way that entrees are accepted more appropriately. Groups of girls who won overalll spots in 2 different category levels?
We appreciate your feed back and sorry that you did not enjoy your STAR SYSTEMS EXPERIENCE. Our schedule has been re-worked to alleviate the costume changes we used it on the last few regionals in 2015. The owner Marcy Tuttle would love to speak with you regarding your experience feel free to contact her at 336 993 9073
The staff was friendly. The competition schedule was pretty irritating. They had no choice but to go out of order because dances were put back to back. Having 8 year olds dance at 8am and again at 9pm...was a bit crazy. Scoring seemed fair, however, the comments did not validate their score. The scoring was strange...and made no sense. Don\'t think we will return. They did special awards one night then never again, my kids look forward to those. 1 judge repeated himself on every dance (they very little he said)...just not a fan.
We are sorry you did not have a great experience. We have changed our scheduling and used the new schedule the last 2-3 regionals in 2015 and it proved to work very well. Usually our judges are very informative and talk alot. We do dancers 12 and under one day and 13 and over another day so you don\'t have to invest the entire weekend at our competition as well as additional expenses such as a hotel, if your child has solos and is involved in groups they are going to be there most of the day however there are usually breaks where families can go grab something to eat etc. If you would like to discuss this event please contact our office at 336 993 9073 and ask to speak to the owner Marcy Tuttle.
The staff was really great and so pleasant but wow, these guys just let the big studio attending this event railroad them - they were no where close to following the schedule and we had no idea what was happening next. In one of our categories every other entry got to dance HOURS earlier which seems rather unfair. AND the judging was just so odd - at least for our solo - there was a 14 point difference between the top score and the lowest - how on earth can two people sitting next to each other - both apparently well qualified - see something so differently???
we believe we have addressed some issues you mentioned with most studio owners that were at this event. If you would like to discuss this regional please contact our office at 336 993 9073.We would love to discuss this with you!
I have been going to dance competitions for 12 years. This competition set up was poorly thought out. They started the children dancing at 7 am and had them dancing until 10 with awards following. They kept them dancing until 10 PM on Sunday night leaving families who traveled driving late at night, and keeping kids out on a school night. They waited to have the title pageant late in the day on the third day of competition when the kids where tired out. They did nothing for fun with the kids. It was strictly a business like atmosphere. How many dances can we get into a weekend. Awards were so fast you cound not even understand what the announcer was saying. I am not sure how the judges could make an honest critique as they we not looking up and I even saw one texting on his cell phone!!
This comp was fun but there is certainly room to improve. There was a lot of down time at this competition and it all goes back to scheduling. Many studios had their dances scheduled back to back and when the company was approached about it, they said not to worry about it and to just go when your dance was ready. This created back ups back stage and many lags in the schedule. The judging was fair and the staff was very friendly. The awards were read VERY fast which was fine but it left those who are new to competition dance in the dust. There probably should have been one additional award ceremony on Saturday because dances that danced at noon had awards at 5:30. That is too long especially for petites. The venue was great although the Northwest Sport show was going on so the convention center was packed and parking was difficult. Its important to note though, the convention center is the right size venue for this comp. Overall, this comp had some struggles but the levels were accurate, the judging was fair, the venue was the right size, and the kids had fun. If our studio goes back that\'s fine, if not, I probably won\'t miss it.
we have changed our scheduling and tried it the last 2-3 events of 2015 and at nationals and it worked out very well....we have to book this venue 2 years in advance and unfortunately cannot control what the venue may put in there after we have booked although because we do have children in the building they TRY to be cautious of what else is in the building. We hope you will give us another try in 2016
We LOVE this competition. The scoring has been the fairest we have seen & the judges critiques are constructive. The backstage crew is amazing and fun to work with. Last year\'s judges were a tad bit better than this years. I will say there was a very picky judge who pointed out very minute nit picky details, but that\'s what we\'re there for I guess. The competition did get started late on Friday and tends to not run early in our city. We too did not get any special judge\'s awards at our ceremonies. Every competition is looking for something different. I feel this one is fair and I agree with the routines that win the overalls. Can\'t wait to go back again!
Thank you for your comments. I do believe they got a late start due to weather in the area, and a judge\'s flight was 30 minutes late...sometimes we have things out of our control. Most of our judges give lots of feedback...hopefully they gave some constructive criticism. We look forward to seeing you in 2016
Bottom line: Scheduling is terrible. I would not choose to go back to this competition. I can\'t understand what their method or reasoning is to scheduling. 9y/o solos-18y/o solos don\'t need to be on the same night/same overall awards. They have too many levels groups combined for overall award sessions. I will admit their announcer was fast (sometimes too fast though) at reading out awards and kept award sessions moving. 9 year old soloists who took the stage at 3pm attended awards at 10:30pm on Friday. No special awards were given after the first award session (I went to the first 3 of the weekend - out of 5) Trophies were breaking all over the place. Emcee/sound engineer seemed like he had trouble running the equipment. Dancers were consistently waiting upwards of 60 seconds for their music to start. For solos/duets/trios they ran close to on time and stuck to the schedule. for groups they had to jump all over the schedule because groups of the same kids in different dances were scheduled too close together. ex: 1 team from my studio with 3 dances was scheduled as consecutive entries in the program. Again, I would not want to go back to this event. BEWARE: the photo/video company they use is EXPENSIVE. (Platoon)
This competition has been great (I went last night and im going all day tomorrow). I got a elite high gold and first overall in my division! The judges are so nice. The only thing is is that they gave me a sweatshirt but ut says top teacher! :( i wish i could get a new pne
we are so glad that you had a great time at our competition. Did you get a different sweatshirt? Please always feel free to go to the backstage crew to exchange something such as this. If you did not get the correct jacket, please call our office at 336 993 9073. We look forward to seeing you in 2016
Great comp free breakfast before 730am & master classes @ nationals
Thank you for your comments...glad you had a great time at our nationals...our master teachers are amazing and the classes are ALL FREE!
This competition ran so late Friday night - we didn\'t get home until after midnight. They also combined large and lines and teens and seniors together. Would it be that much trouble to have separate overalls for these categories?
We have changed our scheduling and tried it at the end of our 2015 tour as well as our nationals...it seemed to work out well for everyone. In 2016 we are no longer combining overalls. HOWEVER, if you are eligible for an overall and you are the only routine, you must receive an Elite High Gold achievement to receive the overall award. We are very excited about these changes. We hope to see you in 2016
They were pretty much on schedule all day. The judges were really tuff on the dancers but it was all good. The awards ceremony went fast and greatly appreciate that so the competition could stay on schedule.
Thank you for your comments. Our judges usually give feedback that will really help the dancer. We try to have fun with the dancers while moving quickly through the awards ceremony. We look forward to seeing you in 2016
My daughter LOVES this competition. Our studio attended the nationals last year and had a blast.
Thank you for your comments. We are so happy that everyone had a blast! We look forward to seeing you in 2016
Very poor competition - and I have been to many competitions and conventions over eight years. They ran late the whole weekend, culminating in a 10:45 finish on a Sunday night. The judging is very inconsistent and technique is definitely not the emphasis here. They combined competition of seniors and teens, so thirteen year-olds competed against eighteen year-olds. I would not recommend this competition. There are much better ones out there.
We have changed the combination of overalls for our 2016 season. We will no longer combine overalls HOWEVER you must receive an Elite High Gold achievement to win the overall if you are in a category alone. We have also changed our scheduling to make the competition move along more quickly. We hope you will give Star Systems another try in 2016.
They ran on time and seemed very organized. Some of the numbers were moved around but worked out in our favor! I only wished that they did the photogenic all in one awards session and that their program book wasn\'t so expensive. Otherwise great comp!
Thank you for the comments. We have changed our scheduling and used the new scheduling the end of regionals this year and also at Nationals....it worked well. We look forward to see you in 2016
Used to go to this competition every year including nationals, but they seem to be spread too thin now. Judging inconsistent.
Amazing competition, well organized & extremely positive environment for dancers of all ages!!!! Highly recommend star systems be part of your competition schedule!!!!!
Thank you for your comments. We are glad you enjoyed our regional event. We look forward to seeing you in 2016
Star Systems has always been a competition that I have enjoyed going to. Marcy Tuttle and her crew do an amazing job. I have never been to a competition that I didn\'t feel that the dances were not judged fairly. My daughter does not compete any more but if she did, I know that we would be going to a Star Systems competition. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you so much for your comment. Glad our events hold special memories for your family....feel free to come visit us any time we are near you even if your daughter no longer competes!
We\'ll run and organized and the staff is very friendly. Leaned on contemporary and lyrical and no other styles even made the top ten. Judges had nothing negative (all great, beautiful, wonderful) yet still scored low. Saw same boy do a solo in tap as age 15 and the next day do a solo and duet in lyrical as age 18. If I had to guess, he looked 18.
duet/trio/groups is an average age of dancers....if he did a solo as a 15 year old that means his duet partner was older which jumped them up to the older age division. Our overalls very from city to city depending on the entries, we have top routines in all genres. At our nationals, one overall went to a Hip Hop routine, and another went to a Ballet group, another was a tap routine....it depends on the entries. Would love to see you in 2016.
Not the best, felt unorganized. Before the competition teachers were expected to turn in their music, not unusual, but the music table was right in the front of the auditorium and could be turned in throughout the day right before your routine. Seems a little simpler to have it all turned in at once. At awards they called dances so fast that awards were mixed up. My dancer was called as a gold recipient and received that award but placed second in lineup, above high gold recipients. After calling they realized they had made a mixup and did send her the correct trophy and award. This makes me question if this happened to any of the other dances. I did like how with the judges critiques they provided a video and you could watch as you followed along with their voices and critiques.
Thank you for your comments....we ask that all music be turned in before competition begins, if a teacher does not want to do that...we can\'t force her to. We are encouraging teachers/studios this year to upload all their routines on a drive....much simpler for the emcee and the studio owner. My guess is your daughters routine was announced correctly but the awards crew gave her the incorrect award, this does happen occasionally because we move quickly through the awards. we hope you will return in 2016!
Very fun to attend. Great atmosphere and very friendly people.
Thank you for your comment, glad you had fun, and look forward to seeing you in 2016!
Tough scoring but a well-done competition. I wish they accepted independent entries. Enjoyed their regionals and nationals events.
Thank you for your comments...we are happy you enjoyed our regionals and national events. We currently feel we can streamline our competition and have it run more efficiently if we only accept routines via a studio. We hope to see you in 2016
Absolutely the best comp ever!! So fun to attend!! This is definitely one we will be attending!!
Thank you for your comments...we are pleased that you, your students and parents had an enjoyable weekend. We look forward to seeing you in 2016!
Ran late, but overall good experience. Would go back.
thank you for your comments...hope to see you in 2016
I\'m very pleased with this comp. My parents and students were all pleased, backstage managers were great! They ran on time, and judging was very fair! We will be returning to star systems, and can\'t wait to do so!
Thank you for your comments, happy that you and your families had a great weekend. We look forward to seeing you all in 2016!
My daughter enjoyed the competition but our studio is still waiting on winnings. Nationals was in July and we haven\'t heard a thing on when to expect them... :(
thank you for your comments...forms are sent for tax purposes via email to teachers in August. Sometimes teachers set them aside and forget we just got 3 last week....and we had to re-send them to the studio. If your studio has NOT received their award money please have your studio owner contact us as soon as possible. Look forward to seeing you in 2016
Backstage managers were not helpful, and they ran VERY, VERY late. Had little ones dancing at nearly midnight. Not a good experience.
thank you for your comments. Marcy Tuttle the owner of the competition would love to speak to you regarding your event. Please contact her at 336 993 9073. We would like the opportunity to see that you have a better experience with us!
First time we have ever tried star systems and we are hooked!! Super fun environment and very very helpful staff! We are coming back!
thank you for your comments....we are very pleased your first time with us was a positive one. We look forward to seeing you in 2016
Fun
YAY! See you in 2016!
Very disappointed this year. Ran either very early or very late. Judging was not consistant.
thank you for your comment...we are sorry you didn\'t have a positive experience...we hope you give us another chance our judges are usually very talkative seasoned judges giving good feedback. Hope you will try again in 2016!
Not the best competition we have attended, but certainly not the worst. Small venue, short on dressing rooms. They judged like they had never seen dancing before. Strange comments.
thank you for your comments.....I am guessing on the venue....there are dressing rooms upstairs backstage that many people are not aware of...if the event is large enough we also do dressing rooms in a corner of the lobby. Hope you will give us a try in 2016. We have many other events in NC in larger venues...perhaps a venue change would make a difference. Hope you will give us a try in 2016!
Not good. My seven and eight years olds were dancing past 1:00am in the morning because they were so far behind! I would never ask our parents to go back.
Please contact the owner of the competition Marcy Tuttle at 336 993 9073. We are not aware of ANY of our regionals that had ANYONE dancing at 1:00 am...its absolutely something we do not allow. We look forward to speaking to you!
Not my favorite but will definitely return. Venue was small with little to no dressing area. However, everything ran on time and the judging seemed fair.
Didn\'t really have problems, just not a great experience. My daughter who really only dances in one she group was at competition for over 16 hours. There did not appear to be any time limit for prop set up, one prop taking over 30 minutes to set up. And there did not appear to be any questioning of categories when people were clearly in the wrong level!
Terrible venue - no area at all for dancers to get ready and backstage was disorganized. Stage and lighting was good. Awards - speaker was so fast you could not understand him or keep up. Plus, awards were way too long - why so many?
Not bad, not the best. Judges not very professional, awards so fast dancers didn\'t know what was said and venue could be in a more centralized area of the state. Would think about returning but hoping for a better experience next time if we do!
Not bad but not as good as others I have attended.
Obsessed with Star Systems! Their awards are the bomb, judges critiques are great, staff is great and they always pick awesome venues! Marcy Tuttle truly knows what she is doing, well worth the time and money, highly recommend to studios with any level of experience from beginner to advanced! XO
ABSOLUTELY love this competition!! Very well run and extremely FAIR!! Love how the awards ceremony is run! Its fun and exciting for the kids! This competition is well worth the money spent!! The judges are great and give critiques that are actually useful! Looking forward to next year!!
We have attended Star Systems twice & both times it was a wonderful experience. They chose an excellent venue. Judging is fair and honest. The judges provide excellent feedback and critiques. This competition runs on time and even early. My daughter has a lot of fun competing at Star Systems & we look forward to returning next year!
Had a great time at star systems competition! Definitely looking forward to next year!
FANTASTIC and FAIR competition! Has levels for all dancers to be scored at the level they compete in! Judging is fair and the critiques you get back are spot on and very helpful to all dancers! Marcy (director) is absolutely the nicest person you will meet and truly cares about each and every child on the stage! Awards ceremonies are FUN and and lets every dancer have their chance to be recognized for what they have all worked for! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR EVERY STUDIO! Would go to every city if we could! xo..
Competition was nice but the venue was horrible choice. I know for a fact we had to be way over capacity for that building. In the dressing room you couldn\'t even bend over to pick something up if you\'d dropped it. I sure hope they remedy that in the future!
Great competition. No complaints. My parents enjoyed it
We have done this competition 3 times in the last 5 years and it is, by far, my favorite. Very fair judging and fun competition. Great venues, as well.
We have done this competition 4 different years in the 12 years my daughters have been competing. We avoided it after 2 consecutive years due to what we perceived as less than stellar judging practices. After 6 years we attempted it again. In 2013 we had a generally positive experience and returned this year. Once again, we found the judging to be less than stellar. It would be wonderful for judges to be knowledgeable in all areas of dance including tap. I don\'t care how long a judge stayed around as a contestant on SYTYCD...he/she has no business judging in a genre they have never trained in. If you have no one to properly critique something...don\'t offer it as a category. Oh,wait...I forget...they need to pay the \"I was on SYTYCD for a couple weeks so I demand a ton of money\" judge. Starsystems? Maybe we will try you in another 6 years, but don\'t count on it.
On the positive side, judging was fair, critiques were extremely helpful, the backstage manager was really nice and helpful, plenty of dressing room space, the iPad screen was nice. The sound system made all of the routines sound fantastic. There was really great talent that was fun to watch. On the negative side, it did not go in order at all. My students kept asking me when they were going on and I just started telling them \"whenever you are ready\". I didn\'t know what else to say. The award ceremony, although fast, were scheduled very far apart, sounded as fast as an auction and no special awards are given. There didn\'t seem to be a personal touch. They were also scheduled way too late. I don\'t know if we will attend again. I am undecided.
Just finished participating at event and my parents/students had a wonderful time. The event ran on time with only an occasional delay for costume changes. Staff worked with directors to assist the dancers with changes and kept dancers well being in account. Great awards, pretty trophies and I love the opportunity to \"Exchange trophies for donations to national charities\" This organization gives back to communities across the nation. The stage was prepared well and the backstage computer monitors made it easy to see the order of performances. We had a great time and will be participating again at Nationals. Free Master Classes offered at these events and that is a huge plus! In this business for many years...I suggest you give this organization a try! Fair, professional and honest.
My parents and students really enjoy attending this competition and love when we can attend their fall workshop \"Shock\". We find the schedule often runs ahead and finishes earlier than the schedule calls for. While some numbers get accidently scheduled close, the staff at Star Systems is always ready to wait and help make adjustments to fix the issue. Most always our experience at our regional Star Systems event is positive, the kids have a great time at the awards and Marcy, Jimmy and all the staff members are pleasant and ready to make your time with them as stress free as possible.
We attended Star Systems in Chicago this weekend and it was a fantastic way to end our competition season. Allen and the rest of the Star Systems staff ran a very well organized competition and were so accommodating to dancers who had quick changes. The iPad Big Board was a great idea so that anyone backstage could see who was on stage, who was checked in, and who they were waiting on to check in. That made the whole weekend so much more organized!! The judging was extremely fair and the talent was outrageous. Our studio was not one to take home a lot of platinums or overall awards, but we had a great time watching the amazing talent of some of the other studios and felt our dancers were judged fairly. Kudos to Marcy Tuttle and the rest of the Star Systems organization. Cannot wait to see you back in Chicago next year! Thank you for a GREAT weekend in Chicago!
This competition should have negative starts!! Poorly organized, RUDE staff. When I read the other low stars and bad reviews I just have to agree with what everyone else complained about. The picture/video staff was rude. The videos are unavailable for viewing? They are VERY expensive. I usually buy all of the dances from my studio. Most other competitions we go to give you a cheaper price the more dances you buy so I can buy my kids a dance memory they can watch and enjoy for years to come. But SS charges $25 per dance no matter how many you buy, and I can\'t watch them first? For my $400 I want to see what I am buying. Most of the pictures were fuzzy or too dark. I hated how the dancers were scheduled. Bouncing all over the place so you don\'t know who went or when you were up unless you sat there beginning to end keeping track of what numbers have been onstage. At one point nobody had checked in so they gave an open call to whoever wanted to go. Do NOT want to do this competition again!
If I could give negative stars I would. This competition was THE MOST poorly organized I have EVER been to!! First issue is that they scheduled dancers back to back and would hold numbers constantly. For us,we want our dancers to dance in the category they are competing in, so that the judges are watching all routines in that category at the same time. It was hard to watch a category fully because someone was always dancing ahead or holding their number because of costume conflicts. Very hard to keep track of who is competing against who. Numbers scheduled for 7pm dancing at 3pm completely out of order. They had multiple music issues. Music just stopped in the middle of a dance more than once. At the end of the night on Saturday the announcer tells the parents who were still there, they they are going to start the competition early on Sunday, the emails and the website say 7:30 but we are going to start at 7??!!? WHAT? The man running the Photography/Video booth could not have been more rude!! The pictures were terrible, very dark and blurry. When I asked he said he \"might\" be able to lighten/clear them up a little. At $10 an image? I don\'t think so...and the videos are unavailable for preview. He said you just have to trust me. HAHAHA....NO

It was hard to watch a category fully because someone was always dancing ahead or holding their number because of costume conflicts. Happy with the Rochester venue. Beautiful theatre. Changerooms were nice however, very, very crowded at moments. Judging was so bizarre. Judges were marking 4-7 marks different. This should not happen at a competition of this stature. If one judge is skewing the marks either up or down, the comp director should address that after the first awards session. This was obviously not done as our marking sheets that we received had one judge marking 4-8 marks lower than the other 2 judges consistently over the 3 day competition. That judge should have been spoken to by the competition director to advise them that their expectations might be a bit too high.
My students, my parents, and myself really enjoyed our experience. It was our 1st comp of the season which normally means lots of stress, but Star Systems\' management made the weekend run very smoothly. The division levels are NOT by just how many dances you are in. Competitions\' rules are not so that they make it impossible to compete at the highest level. Most of the time they are there to protect the most novice dancers from competing against ones who are much more advance. SST\'s rules are like most comps where it is based on the weekly hours each dancer takes, but if you happen to have a \"novice\" dancer in a LOT of dances that there is no way that dancer only takes 3 hours a week, they are bumped up. (from their website:This means TOTAL class time, not each discipline of dance. For routines this includes solos, duet/trios, and groups. You only need to place dancers based on hours of class. IF they are in too many dances for their level the computer will move them up to the next level of competition.) I find this a very fair fail safe to protect the novice dancers. Like any other comp, Star systems allows a dancer to compete up. Like I said, our group really enjoyed the Star Systems experience. The judges were well educated and diverse and have so far provided the most helpful critiques we have gotten this year. From my teacher perspective: Our dances that I know did well, scored well and the ones that I know that did not do as well did not score as well. We are even planning on Star Systems to be our Nationals we go to.
What a racket this one is, the categories are based on how many routines your dancer/studio is in to get to the next level. Even though a dancer may take over 20 hours of dance (and yes that is 20 hours) but compete in less than 7 routines then they are placed in the lowest level. It is all about the money to get them into the next level not about the actual talent of the dancers. This is not a true dance competition, the ones who like it are the ones who dumped a bunch of dancer(s) into routines so they can get the Super Star level. A true dancer would not just do 10+ dances in one competition just to get to the next level - they work on their technique and showcase their talent/art. This is a glorified Just for Kix competition! The whole thing ran late, dancer(s) were scheduled back to back, they jumped around all over the place so no one knew where we where at in the schedule. The awards ceremony means nothing...how in the heck do you get a platinum award and all the dancer does is extensions (I don\'t need to keep seeing your leg over your head) or lying on the floor half of the routine and no actual dance. Most of these dances had no story, no emotion it was just someone on stage getting to the quota of routines so they can be in a higher level. If you have true dancers who really know their technique, go somewhere else; this is just a racket to make money. I cannot critique the judges or even the staff because I did not interact with them. I am only critiquing that this whole set up of levels for this competition is just a means to make money and if you disagree, I challenge you to go and register your dancers in less than 7 routines in the next competition and have them only as Shining Stars.
My students and parents love this competition! The scoring is fair and easy to understand. It is very professionally run. Award ceremonies happen often and don\'t take too long. We love everything about this competition.
Very nice competition loved it!!!!
We recently attended this competition. It was originally scheduled for 3 days, but due to an unexpected snowstorm in the south, they rescheduled Friday night solos for Saturday. I will say that even though that made Saturday a little bit longer, they were super-organized and everything ran smoothly. Things moved at a quick pace so there wasn\'t a lot of unnecessary downtime. When studios had dances scheduled back-to-back, they worked with them to allow for costume changes by allowing those who were ready to perform to go ahead and hit the stage. When dressing room space became an issue, they opened more. They were very accommodating and I was impressed. The announcers gave constant reminders about auditorium etiquette so I didn\'t notice as much of an issue with people walking around during performances. The staff was very friendly and even with the last-minute schedule changes, the participating studios also remained positive and friendly. I was very pleased with our experience!
Mixed experiences across two years with this one. Some great critiques with helpful advice; other critiques were very quiet, with only occasional comments, all negative. One regional venue had horrible dressing room issues; another regional venue had great dressing rooms. Backstage staff was generally friendly and helpful across all events. Horrible scheduling was pretty consistent, with dancers repeatedly scheduled in back-to-back numbers.
To the parent from VA - How can you rate a competition one star when it did not happen? The directors did not arbitrarily cancel due to lack of entries or some other reason. They were all set to proceed. Prince William County School called a Code Red because of weather and would not let anyone use the building. I understand your child was disappointed. I had many students who were excited for this competition and were also disappointed. However, had Star Systems been allowed to enter the facility it would have been a great competition. Unfortunately, it was way to short of notice to find a different facility. I hope Star Systems will come back to the area again.
Competition was cancelled last minute. Realized it wasn\'t Star Systems\' fault; however, there should have been a better notification process as parents didn\'t know it was cancelled until they\'d already traveled to the event and paid for their hotel room.
Our studio always enjoys Star Systems. Looking forward to next time!
2013 was our first year to go and I have to say out of the competitions that we do other than the one we go to their nationals...this has been the best. An enjoyable time was had by all!
Wow, never thought a competition weekend could be this bad. One day an hour and a half ahead and no one was ready (or even at the show yet!) because of it. The next day they were about 2 hours late and I had little ones dancing past midnight. They didn\'t know what they were doing from start to finish, and made lame and rude excuses the whole time. Let me save you some heartache and lots of money, don\'t go.
Always first class!!! Great venue amazing stage! Back stage crew great with kids super helpful. Awards always exciting and on time!!! Very qualified judges. Always first on our list!! Can not wait for 2014!
My dancers and parents...and I love this event! They bring qualified judges, backstage crew ...very helpful and are always on time. Their Nationals are the best ever! My dancers are given the opportunity to dance with great studios and receive FREE classes from Master teachers. The entire week is always inspiring! Marcy and her team really care about the individual dancer and it shows!!
Not great. They hosted at a very run down high school, packed way to many competitors into too few dressing rooms. The AC went out in the Theatre, parents and grandparents were not happy. The video critiques were terrible quality and not audible at all. Felt like a stressful weekend, with little benefits and no take-aways. They also do the cheesy photo contest/modeling contest to make extra money...very poor quality. It\'s a money sucker.
;)
Worst comp we have ever been to. The venue was extremely small, they wouldn't let parents in or out of the room to watch our kids dance because it was "too full". AND this wasn't their first year reserving this venue. Wouldn't let us backstage to watch either. The judges sat at a table 30 feet up in steep balcony seating at the very back of the auditorium. Their eye line was at the top of the curtains, looking down at the dancers. Also whoever their video/photo person was charged astronomical prices and his images were all blurry or zoomed too far in (who needs a picture of an armpit?).
Fair judging and professional atmosphere. We will definitely return!
Not great. Seemed to favor acro over movement. Inconsistent with judging. Poor venue.
We are so excited that Star Systems is coming back to Kansas City this year! By far the best company around! Family oriented, fun, cares about the kids, studio owners, parents! We love it! Fair judging, and an amazing staff! We are so excited to go back this year!!!
I am so excited that Star Systems is coming back to Chicago! I cannot say enough nice things about Marcy and the Star Systems family! They made us feel like part of their family from day one. The back stage guys make the dancers feel so comfortable and relaxed before they go on stage. Marcy is always available to answer questions and truly listens to comments and concerns from studio owners. All of the staff is so accommodating and friendly. We have done regionals and nationals with Star Systems and judging has been fair and consistent. We appreciate the fact that Star Systems does not compete on Thursdays or Friday mornings so we do not have to pull our girls out of school to get to a competition. I could go on and on... Thank you Marcy and the rest of the Star Systems family for running an amazing competition and giving our girls and our dance families such a wonderful and positive competition experience!
Star Systems is a fantastic competition that cares about their kids and the studios. The staff is very professional and they work hard to bring in the best judges in the country. Not only do you win cash awards at regionals rather than gift certificates but it carries over to the national competition. Looking forward to a wonderful year with Star Systems! Can\'t wait!
Pretty must a disaster from start to finish. Late, poor judging, very expensive merchandise. I could go on.
not a big fan. They seems to cater too much to the larger studios and don't care if you don't bring a boatload of numbers. Judging was not consistent.
I have tried Star System numerous times over the years. The Regionals were a bit weak, but we decided to attend the nationals anyway. Nationals this year was the biggest disappointment I have ever taken my students to! Our results were fine, including some high point awards, but the judging was inconsistent and their judges comments utterly ridiculous. I will never waste my students money or my time with this competition again.
Very dissapointing all the way around. Avoid this one.
I have been taking students to Star Systems on the regional and national level for the past 16 years. It is BY FAR the best company out there. Their production values are second to none. Their judges are working professionals in the industry who always provide honest and helpful critiques. The owners and staff are extremely approachable and accessible. The thing that impresses me most about this company is that they make every studio feel welcome, regardless of the number of routines entered. Numerous dance competitions and conventions come through our city each season. Star Systems meets the needs of our musical theatre based program. They accommodate our singers as well as our competitive dancers on a variety of levels. The competition is fierce and judging is always fair. It's a chance for our students to perform in a beautiful facility, get feedback and critiques and celebrate small victories along the way. Once you've attended the best... why bother with the rest?
Thank you StarSystems for a memorable closing to our 2013 competition season!! Our teachers, students and parents had a wonderful time in Panama City and the dancing was GREAT!! The students who attended the classes really enjoyed them and the parents were happy with all of it! The staff is always friendly and professional and the environment is always family oriented. You will certainly see us again next year!
My daughter has been competing at Star Systems for the past 9 seasons... We have been to their regionals and many nationals, at different venues. It is a wonderful and enjoyable competition. The Star Systems family is pleasant and the kids love them. We attend Star Systems every year and will continue to do so. We are a small studio and have never felt that we were slighted because of it. See you next year Star Systems!!
We have competed at Star Systems regionals and nationals competitions for the last few years and it is always a great experience. Great staff and they select wonderful venues that are dance mom friendly!
Star Systems is one of the best competitions we have ever attended! We love the staff and the atmosphere! We are a smaller studio and they have always treated us just as good as the bigger studios! Their awards ceremony is the absolutely best one we have experienced! They make it SO fun for the kids and its always so memorable! Their staff isn\'t too bad to look at either lol! The judging always seems very fair and we have never had an issue with anything. We love Marcy and her Star System\'s family and we plan to attend their competition every season!
Want the truth? Know where you are on a competitive level? Check this one out. Win or lose. You are in a great professional atmosphere. Greatness of dancers and family atmosphere. Extremely professional. I recommend.
Star Systems is by far the most genuine, family oriented competition out there! The entire staff is extremely professional, and GENUINELY care about what a dance competition is really about. They make the kids feel special, and treat the teachers with the upmost respect. We can\'t wait to go back!
This competition really impressed me. They were on schedule and they judged fairly!
We just returned from Star Systems. Our studio is STRONG in tap. Always in the overalls. We have true rhythm tappers with true technique, and were totally humiliated by one judge who preferred fluff over substance. I would imagine this person had never worn a pair of tap shoes in her 20 some years of existence. On all the tap score sheets, she marked our tappers (solo’s & groups) down 8 to 10 points lower from other 2 judges. Big red flag right there. Chose fluff tap with props in place of technique. Our dancers were humiliated as well as the teachers. And not to mention they were handing out platinum’s like candy. So don\'t know what the rest of you are talking about with the platinum award actually meaning something. This comp was a total joke and I was embarrassed that our studio even attended. I’m sorry. This is not sour grapes. Dancers no matter what the genre should not have to worry about the judges not being experienced enough to know what they’re doing. Dance is too expensive and time consuming to have one entire competition be a total waste. There are plenty of other competitions out there now. If the judging is inadequate, then don’t go back!!! Money talks. We will NOT be returning.

Too much special treatment given to studios/owners that bring Large numbers--seems to be all about who they can impress..they have gotten way to big for their britches!
Star Systems is by far my favorite dance competition. The staff is professional, but they make it fun for the dancers and the spectators. We have been going to their Nationals since my daughter started competing and I wouldn\'t change a thing. I wish we could do two of their regionals instead of going to other competitions. A platinum at Star Systems means something to our kids.
I believe Star Systems is the best run competition there is! I competed on the Star Systems stage since I was 7 and am now a Studio owner who takes my own dancers there! We always attend Star Systems Nationals because they are the most fun! The staff is extremely kind, helpful and they always try their best to get to know each individual dancer at regionals and nationals! This is the only competition where getting a \"platinum\" still means something prestigious! Not only do our students love to go to this competition but so do our parents! WE LOVE STAR SYSTEMS!
Star Systems has been a home to me as a dancer growing up, and now as an adjudicator for their competition! I will always back a competition circuit that is honest and fair! I recommend EVERY studio try a Star Systems near you, you won\'t be disappointed! -Sarah

They have just gotten too big. Overcrowded dressing rooms. Awards ceremonies too late and way too loud. They seem to bring the volume of the music up constantly throughout the day until your head is pounding.
